NY gun owner's list.

Wow, I simply don't know what to say about this. But if you live in Westchester or Rockland counties you should know that your name and address has been published.

Marc,

It's worse than that! The map locations go way upstate, though they are fewer and farther between. Anybody that has registered with and gotten their permit in that county even shows up where they've moved to since then.

I have heard of this being done for CCW holders - not sure how this can be legal?

If we're listed at the courthouse, generally it's public information that anyone can look up and compile. On the contrary, I'm wondering how it could be illegal. Boy, the internet shrinks the world; in this case, it saves a trip to the county clerk's office.

Good point, Rich, if the perps are after guns. However If one were after guns, it might be better to invade/assault a dealer, equipped to deal with his safe--where there would be lots of them. The research to go after them a few at a time might not be worth the trouble and risk. If the listed owners got them for domestic protection, then the a crook would first have to endure the object of his plot being used to defend its home!

Our birdbrain lawmakers wrote it right into the law  . Must have been many years ago. The media does it because they can. All they have to do is FOIL the records. You expect them to act honorably (the Journal News is a major area newspaper), but hey, they're a bunch of a$$hat liberals like almost every other paper. They should get sued if somebody gets burglarized.

New York State Penal Law Section 400.00(5):
S 400.00 Licenses to carry, possess, repair and dispose of firearms.
5. Filing of approved applications. The application for any license, if granted, shall be filed by the licensing officer with the clerk of the county of issuance, except that in the city of New York and, in the counties of Nassau and Suffolk, the licensing officer shall designate the place of filing in the appropriate division, bureau or unit of the police department thereof, and in the county of Suffolk the county clerk is hereby authorized to transfer all records or applications relating to firearms to the licensing authority of that county. The name and address of any person to whom an application for any license has been granted shall be a public record. Upon application by a licensee who has changed his place of residence such records or applications shall be transferred to the appropriate officer at the licensee`s new place of residence. A duplicate copy of such application shall be filed by the licensing officer in the executive department, division of state police, Albany, within ten days after issuance of the license. Nothing in this subdivision shall be construed to change the expiration date or term of such licenses if otherwise provided for in law.

David, The criminal element in Upstate NY just a month ago did just that to a dealer.

mrerick 12-25-2012 10:40 AM

New York state requires registration of all handguns, and that registration is linked to your concealed carry permit (with the first handgun on that permit).

So much for responsible journalism.

In Raleigh, one of our TV stations web editors published supposedly anonymous CCH permit holder address information. Of course, people living on sparsely populated roads were pretty much easy to identify.

In response, Grass Roots North Carolina initiated a boycott and published as much complete personal information about the reporter as could be found on the internet and in public record... He got the message.

The boycott lost the station one of their major advertisers, a car dealership.

And I noted that some of the facebook pages provided have been taken down.

jonnyc 12-26-2012 01:05 PM

Anyone know if this is possible in PA?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

This debacle certainly points out the open data is a two-edged sword! So many comments to these articles it's next to impossible to read them all, much less in one sitting...

Interesting this is a Gannett publication. This conglomerated behemoth of journalism was assembled by none other than the late Roy H. Park, whose widow and survivors live in--Ithaca, NY. The school of communications at Ithaca College is named for him; I think his estate put up the dough for their building/facilities. I think old Roy was fairly conservative; he may be doing about 10,000 RPM in his resting place, about now.

tx_oil 12-28-2012 08:26 PM

Just for the record, many of the Facebook pages have been taken down, several of the phone numbers were no good and NO ONE answered at ANY of the numbers listed. Seems the libs do NOT like receiving the same treatment they inflict upon others.

I just heard on the news that the Journal News has hired armed guards, because of a "perceived threat". So they need guns to protect themselves, but nobody else does?

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/03/ny...news.html?_r=0

A noteworthy comment: "The police report said that e-mails received did not contain threats and that armed guards from a private security firm had not reported any problems at the office". In other words: They just want to feel safe, just like the CCW holders do.

Jack Lawman 01-02-2013 07:08 PM

It's getting sillier:

You better help re-elect that guy. It looks like he is actually looking out for his constituents!
Not very many politicians like that in California,at least not any more.

North Carolina is now in process of considering a change to our law to prevent publication of CCH address information...

Here's the legislation (2013 NC House Bill 17) if you'd like to forward it to your state representative and request that they do the same...
