Mauser Commercial

Today I traded for a Luger that is a new style to me. This is only the third one I have ever owned!

It is a 9mm four inch and dated 1939 over the chamber. It is serial no. 7418. All the numbers match except the magazine.
I am told that it is a Commercial "Banner" Mauser. I would say it is in very good shape and finish with an excellent bore. It feeds and fires quite well.

I have about $1,400 invvested in it. In your opinions did I do well or not so well? Let me know along with any other information you can provide.
Thanks,
Marine 3

Pics are needed to say whether or not you did well..what police mark does it have on right side of receiver?

Marine 3 11-24-2012 07:09 PM

Sorry, there are no police marks and I don't have pics capability.

Don, without pictures, then you can best find prices by looking in a guide or gunbroker. Find one that matches yours.

For a wild guess, you have to give a much better description.

Markings on left or right / toggle is marked as? / Matching magazine? / Condition? Any pits? Any loss of bluing? / holster or anything with it?

Personally, I would expect it NOT to be a police, very few 1939 police exist (I have one upstairs from a WW2 Vet / friend)

If you have access to a scanner, you can drape a T-shirt over the pistol and scan to pics and attach them here... ;)

...If you have a scanner...

If accepted into military service, I think they got them, but I would have to get third reich lugers out....

The following is some additional information on my Mauser Banner Luger.

"MAUSER" is marked on the toggle
There is a "Crown U" proof mark on the left side just above the7418 serial no.

There is what appears to be a cursive letter "W" on the front of the frame just below the 7418 serial no.

It is chamber marked "1939"

There is no sear safety
There is no pitting and good blueing (85%)

All parts are serial no. matched 7418 except the magazine
which is number 9383 and has an aluminum base.

It has good condition wood (walnut?) checkered grips.

The seller tells me he thinks it is a commercial manufactured
Mauser Banner Luger that stayed civilian and was never
a military or police pistol.

I hope this helps,
Thanks,
Marine 3

Hi, This search:

http://www.simpsonltd.com/advanced_s...822812&x=0&y=0

should show you a few similar Lugers...

I think you did well if everything is as expected from your descriptions...

Thanks to all who responded to help me out. It appears that finacially I did OK, but more important then that, I have a nice functioning Luger to play with and pass on to my grandsons.
I will watch the forum for more information.
Thanks again,
Marine 3

Marine, Your #7418w Mauser Banner is in the correct serial number range for a 1939 Commerical according to Costanzo WOL book. TH

Edward Tinker 11-30-2012 12:00 PM

if it is dated, then it did NOT stay as a commercial !!

Oh, yes it did :)

Mauser diverted quite a bit of commercial contracts from the regular production, including chamber dates. Documented example: The Dutch Navy contract lugers which have chamber dates.

Here is another 'Commercial' Mauser banner, all matching numbers, with chamber date, as well as a Dutch 1937 dated Navy contract:

Thanks again to all for the good information.
While cleaning this pistol I found the "Crown U" proof on the left side of the breach bolt and on the front of the front sight in addition to the left side of the reciever. The bolt is numbered9383 and has a "stick eagle" with 83 under it.

That is all the marks I can find.

Correction for a mistake in my last post that I just noticed---

The MAGAZINE is numbered 9383 and has a "stick eagle" under it. Not the BOLT.
