Looking for a holster
 

I am a first time poster and new to the forum and hope that I can get some information to help me choose a holster.

I have a 1939 S/42 Luger and am trying to get the appropriate holster for it. I have found a 1939 dated holster that has a makers mark of "R EHRHADT POESSNECK". My question is, is it best to have the holster date match the pistol date? Also I would guess that condition is secondary to the the correct holster.

I really know vary little about lugers and accessaries, any information would be of great help.

Welcome to the forum, Gary. The fact is, that pistols and holsters werwe not paired up by the German military or Police. Literally any date prior to the pistol's production could be considered "correct" upon issue. It is always nice to get the same holster date as the pistol's date of production, but there is no set rule.

Thanks for the information that makes it a little easier to find one. Do you have an opinion on what would be a fair price for an average authentic holster.

I agree with what Alan says; I do try to get fairly close. I don't buy a holster that was made after my gun by more than a few years and if I can do what I really want, I figure;

1 yr before - that yr - the yr after

Condition drives price - ratty holster for a WW2 era, $100-$125 - much nicer - $200-$250

Then if you are looking for a really sweet one, save the pennies

Also, beware of very good, often artificially distressed reproductions out there.

Run any holster you find by knowledgeable people before you commit to buying it. Good photos of all angles of the holster, including the interior, plus closeups of all markings will allow folks to help you make an informed purchase.

There are always holsters appearing in our "For Sale" section. Also check Simpsons, Checkpoint Charlie and other reputable dealers.

I'm looking at two 1939 holsters on ebay right now. I have a hard time spending that kind of money, without having the item in hand.
One is at $102 and the other is a buy it now for $250. I should do some more research before I do something stupid.

If you would enter the ebay sale number perhaps members could help you. I try to get the same year as the luger. As Ed says one year before or after is fine. Supply and demand has a bearing on the prices. WW1 generally are more expensive because of the numbers and time. WW2 holsters are fairly common due to numbers produced and time. To me the condition of the holster should somewhat match the condition of the luger. There are many fakes out there but most are obvious. I think now is a good time to purchase holsters as the prices seem to be down somewhat. Whatever you do let the members on here help you. Welcome to the forum. Bill

Didnt the early holsters have a buckle closure, then later a snap stud for quicker opening?

No the German military holsters have a buckle closure. Exceptions are Police , Navy and Artillery (WW1). These were post and hole. Bill
