Luger of the Month

Dear All- for those Irish fans of the Luger pistol out there, I have just found a photograph of General Richard Mulcahy in his new Free State Army uniform, wearing a rig EXACTLY like the new Luger of the month. Copyright prevents me from showing it to you, but it's on page 84 of Justin Nelson's new book, 'Michael Collins - the Final Days', published by Justin Nelson Productions Ltd, 151 Foxrock Park , Dublin 19. Price is a very reaonable £17 or so, and no, we are not related.....

Regards to all, even if you are not fortunate enough to be Irish.

Your dear Irish friends are upsetting me

Because of a crisis in a medical lab over there, I am stuck here at work in Massachusetts and not on my way to Arizona.

Irish Lugers

I considermyself very fortunate to be the current owner of one of the Navy Lugers smuggled into Ireland by Sir Richard Casemate, a British noble actively involved in seeking Irish independence, and subsequently captured by the British government. These pistols -there were about 20-were purchased as a group by a gentleman in Virginia from the irish government and have a great deal of paper trail backing them up. Mine is a little banged up on the exterior from the poor storage practices in the dublin Castle evidence locker, but internally it appears as new.

I purchased the pistol from the late Frank De Mauro, a very interesting character and fine Luger holster repair craftsman (but not as good as our own-and very much alive-Jerry Burney).

The story of these guns and casemate's subsequent trial is very well told in the book, The Rebels, the author of which I do not remember.

Re: Irish Lugers

Dear Tom - would I be right in assuming that the person that you are referring to is actually Sir Roger Casement? Please try and get the name of this great patriot and humanitarian correct. After all, if I said that I had weapon that was the personal property of General Geoffrey Pattern you would have very right to feel a bit peeved. Point taken?

Good.

Tom, I agree completely with your comments about Jerry Burney's work.

The photos I have seen of his workmanship are remarkable... I am glad he has personal scruples that keeps him out of the black market in bogus leather!
