Gew 98 with intertwined BS marks

I thought I had seen a discussion of the intertwined BS mark on this forum but could not locate it. I recently acquired this 1917 Danzig G98M with the BS mark on the butt and barrel ring. What is the latest regarding the mark?

Cool markings. Id be curious to see what others say about that.

Karl, this marking is discussed on p. 327-8 of HWIS. Bottom line is that it is unidentified. Many think it is a Bahnschutz marking but, as explained in HWIS, I very much doubt it.

Railway Security? Wouldn't the markings be the same/similar to the Luger Bahnschutz markings? (I don't have a pic, but I recall it being discussed...I like trains)... :)

As I understand from various other forums, the mark is documented on several Ortgies pistols, Carbine 98 AZ (or carbine 98a) rifles, Gew 98M rifles (like mine) and a single MP18 at the West Point museum. Speculation about the mark includes the Bahnschutz theory above. In my opinion, the mark was probably associated with some kind of police or paramilitary unit but I am not very knowledgeable about this fascinating period of history.

The RBD markings on other weapons is one of the reasons I don't think the overlapping BS markings are Bahnschutz.
