US Leather Cartridge Case

About ten year ago I paid fifty buck for this leather case. It already had ammo and I don't know any more. I would appreciate any info about it and its markings.

Looks like an 30-40 Krag cartridge case with several CAV unit marks very cool.

cirelaw 10-22-2012 01:35 PM

Thanks! Can you date it?

The 30-40 Krag was used for only a short period of time before being replaced with the 03 Springfield. Time frame 1894- early 1900's.

1890-1903

BTW...these go for big bucks with collectors of early western gear.

A Troop, 9th. Cavalry, Weapon number 50?

swampsavage 10-22-2012 05:24 PM

9th Cavalry fought alongside Teddy Roosevelt during Spanish American war. Up San Juan hill etc. You got a piece of history there.

9th Cav

"9th Cavalry fought alongside Teddy Roosevelt during Spanish American war. Up San Juan hill etc. You got a piece of history there."

If I remember correctly, the 9th Cav were the "Buffalo Soldiers" and, at that time, one of the Company Commanders on the trek up Kettle and San Juan hills was a young Captain named John "Black Jack" Pershing. (Although his real nickname was far more derogatory...)

Great Artifact!!!

Regards,

John

The ammo looks like it might be 7.62x54r. Russian rifle ammo.

Also, here's a replica of your case.

Thank You, now I know what I have. The ammo I agree is not right!

MikeP 10-23-2012 12:42 AM

Looks like 30/40 to me. It is rimmed ammo.
Krag has about the smoothest action of all.

cirelaw 10-23-2012 05:40 AM

Thank You!

Simply Beautiful!!!

alanint 10-23-2012 01:43 PM

Can you show us a detail of the tool, included with the ammo pouch?

cirelaw 10-23-2012 01:55 PM

It was not with it? What kind of tool that I'm missing?
