Help identifying ammo spam can Garand?

Hi Folks, Still trying to complete inventory.. I have an unopened spam can of what I believe (with my failing memory) to be m1 Garand ammo. I am curious to find out the country, year (54?), and if it err umm attracts a magnet so to speak.

Complete marking of can:

DO NOT USE AS FOOD CONTAINER
192 CARTRIDGES
CAL .30 BALL M2
8RND CLIPS
BANDOLEERS
LOT TW41654

Going through a lifetime of military gun collecting so I may be asking about some common and obscure guns in the next few weeks but you all here seem to be the most knowledgeable and not full of hot air like a lot of forums.

If anyone is interested in anything I mention, pop me a note.. most is going to eventually go for sale.. I need to get down to a small safe and only a dozen different types of ammo.

The TW means Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant.
More info about ammo cans here:

Interesting stuff, actually! I have several WWII .50 and .30 cal. cans I knew nothing about until I looked this up!
thx!

If it says "CAL .30 BALL M2" on the label, what leads you to believe it's M1???

8RND CLIPS
BANDOLEERS

Would lead me to believe it is for the M1 Garand. ;)

Yes this is ammo for the M-1 Garand rifle. I have several cans of if myself that I got from the CMP. You can see the details for the M2 Ball load at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.30-06_Springfield

Also, the M2 Ball is the only ammo that should be used in the M1 Garand.

IS and FOR are two different words, and do mean different things.

Since it is unopened, it should still be 'good'. "8rnd Clips" is consistent with the M1 Garand, which uses 'en bloc' clips of 8 rounds. The clips are steel, thus magnetic. They are packed in cloth bandoliers (inside the can), ready to issue to individual riflemen.

As Dana commented, it is a Twin Cities can -

- Also, military cartridges usually carry the year [2 digits] on the cartridge itself.

I have used commercial 30-06 in the Garand and reloads and it shoots fine.

Yes, I would use military ammo in a military rifle, but tolerances (to me) are fine to shoot any standard 30-06 ammunition.

Keep in mind, that if it is a sealed container, opening it will lowers its value a bit.

I think his comment about magnetic is a reference as to whether or not the ammunition is AP or not. I would expect it to be marked on the can in some way if it were.

Yes, with the website someone supplied I was able to find out that the BALL means exactly that.. that is is regular ball ammo and not piercing. That would have been marked AP instead of BALL.

Thanks for all the help!

Linda

Linda, I have purposely bought some AP in a can, just because :)
