Help with DWM 9688K

Hello,
I am looking for info to date this Luger that I found while cleaning out a house. It is a 30 Luger. All matching numbers from what I can see and what I have read so far. On the "safety side" of the gun, under the safety the word "GESICHERT" is inscribed. There are several "N" with the crown over the top of it around the gun. The word "GERMANY" is engraved on the butt of the wood magazine and the front just above the trigger guard. I will ltry to get picturesin tonight but wanted to see if I could get a head start on year/value of htis weapon. Pictures coming soon.
Thanks!

Sounds like a DWM Alphabet commercial from about 1922 (Corrected per Mike below). Value depends on originality all matching and finish condition. Perhaps a $600-$900 pistol. Pictures are a must.

Ya, Working on pics. The Letter for the serial number is "K". Thanks for the info. I was really curious on time frame of manufacture.

Hi,

Anything in particular that you're trying to learn about your Luger?

You asked about value. These commercial Lugers are generally not priced as high as military firearms. It may be the use of flash lighting, but I cannot see evidence of halos around the serial number digits stamped on the barrel. For that reason, it's possible that the barrel has been refinished at some point.

Because of this and general overall finish condition, I would estimate a value at $600 or so.

You should stabilize the active areas of rust on the firearm and magazine.

I was originally interested in the year and origin/history on it. I found this gun in a bank owned property we were working on (along with 3 other guns). Kinda interested in firing it. I had it checked out by gunsmith and they said it looked ok to fire. I just have to get some 30 Luger ammo and try it out. Not something they stock on my local shelves. I will probably try it out and then try to sell it to get something I can carry on me. So any leads on interested parties wouldn't hurt. Any other info or advice is appreciated.

Best lead I can give is to list it here on this forum under the for sale section.

The magazine bottom seems to be a replacement. I would obtain a new magazine rather than relying on this one.

Note the poor wood to metal fit. Someone replaced this at some point.

Your Alpha commerical in the "K" suffix block is in the 2nd block of 10,000 of these lugers made after 1923, so probably made in 1924 or 25. TH

According to Jan Still's 'Weimar Lugers' S#9688k was made in late 1922.
