Luger Rear Sight Options

Hey all!

I've been working on an old re-blued Luger, and intend to make her into a competition ready pistol. One of the big things I've yet to tackle is a proper adjustable rear sight. I'm interested in seeing what sights have been used and much more importantly: how they were installed.

Thus far I've looked into using LPA, Novak and Bo-Mar style sights, but nothing has really jumped out at me as far as practicality and ease of installation goes. I know Herbert Werle installs sights (which appear to be LPAs) on the rear toggle, and was wondering if anyone would be willing to share what modifications are done to make this possible.

Cheers!

Another important question I have: How far back on the rear toggle can the dovetail be milled before it weakens the structural integrity of the 7.2mm toggle pin hole? I imagine the safest for the dovetail would in the middle of the flat area between the cocking knobs and the rear sight, but can it be pushed further towards the rear? Most of these adjustable sights seem to be about 1.4 inches in length, and may have issues clearing the cocking knobs.

I have an old Gun mag article by Skeeter Skelton telling how to mount one of the old style MMC adjustable sights on a Luger. I also have some of the sights.

Here are some other examples also:

Glenn,
Mounting the peep sight on the rear rounded section of the toggle is the only option for a replacement sight that is not attached to the gun. The rear portion of the receiver rails hold the sight in place. If the sight was placed on the flat portion of the toggle link, I doubt that it would survive more than a couple of rounds before it worked sideways and was destroyed.

If anyone has a rear toggle so modified (esp. the MMC configuration) for sale....drop me a note!

This is spectacular! Exactly what i was looking for! you can even very faintly see the outline of the dovetail in the second picture.

If i were to do something similar, the sight would be certainly pinned in place. A solid 1/16 pin would absolutely prevent the sight from moving inadvertently.

So, managed to find some info on the Micro Sight. It appear the sight was originally made for Ruger Flat top revolvers. The base that is on the Luger appears the be a custom manufacture, which would be quite easy to replicate. Bowen Custom Arms appears to make a clone to fit that pistol, and could easily be re-purposed to fit a mount on a Luger. I must say, that is by fat the slickest sight mount i have yet seen on a Luger.

The Bowen model also appears to be an adjustable fixed sight. It uses opposing screws to lock the adjustments in place, as opposed to normal click and spring adjustments.
