Luger Artillery Magazine
 

I have just bought a 1918 Luger Artillery that came out of a trunk that hasn't been opened in 50 years. The pistol was brought back after WWII by an American officer. The magazine in the pistol does not have the same serial number as the pistol. The base of the magazine is wooden with a 1734 serial number with what looks like an X or a cross stamped into it. My question is, is this the type of magazine that would have come in the pistol, or is it older or younger than the 1918 pistol?

Usually a silver tin plated mag. tube, with a wooden bottom. The marking could be a +, showing it as a spare mag. No big surprise that the mag does not match. That is asking a lot!

I bought it from a friend who's grand dad served in WWII and Korea. He was a colonel and had brought back several German pistols and a paratroopers gravity knife. I don't know much about Lugers so I offered him $1k (the "good" price in The Gun Traders Guide) and he thought that was fair. That may have been too much but I liked it. I'm not a expert but it appears to be very nice. It has about 90% of the blue and very few small scratches. The pistols had been stored in bags made from the legs of old flannel PJ's. To me it looks like a used pistol from the 80's but it's 94 years old. Do you think I did OK.

Without seeing it, I would venture to guess that you did more than good.....all the way to excellent!!
