New Luger Rig byf 42

Just to share and to get some feedback about this rig.
Found for consignment in a local gun shop . It is a byf 42 with all matching parts . One concern I have is I could not find any markings on the grips. The screw retainer hole is threaded on both grips and both are located at the bottom at the grips.
(They feel like bakelite ,from a weight perspective)
There is the normal holster wear and some small pitting on the barrel . It came with a bml /42 holster. One of the loops was repaired and I don't know if this was done in the period or later. It has the correct magazines , fxo ( 37 ) with the black plastic bottoms . the spare magazine has same damage to plastic piece. The holster came with a take down tool marked 655 . I am not sure if this correct since the gun has all 135 . Barrel inside is still bright. No import markings ,and the gun shop owner told me it was in the consignors family possession for a long time.
I have read all I could find on this forum and would appreciate your feedback on : is this the correct take down tool ?
are the grips original ?
the holster repair - was it done professionally in the period ?
if not woud be wise to have it redone ?
how many of this type were actually produced
( serial # 3562 a )?
What percent blueing would consider this rig?
What kind of value would you put on this rig ?
Still don't understand for certain what the hump at the back side of the frame is. Is it correct that this humps wer made on only 1934 Lugers to prevent the toggel from falling out ?
All byf 42 were put together from leftover parts?


I am very excited , since this is my first rig I just purchased today . I appreciate all the information you can provide .

Post a clear close up picture of the inside of the grips to get confirmation the grips are original. But it sounds good so far!

Also, please show the serial number on the front of the frame, including the suffix. Thanks.

A couple of clarifications:
- Original Bakelite grips would not necesarily have any markings on the inside.
- The work on the holster strap is not a repair, per se, it is a replacement. That strap is not original to the holster. Although it appears to be a period replacement, this kind of work would have been done in the field and not at depot level.
- A close up of the damage to the one magazine bottom would be helpful
- It would also help to know what the asking price for the rig is? If there is room for you to negotiate or if the asking is beyond all reason?

Thank you very much for your feedback. I am sending more photos. I found the serial number font on the front to be different than the other numbers. Also , there is a small initial under the grip on the frame ?The right grip is a little loose. Asking price was $ 1,150 and I got it for $ 1,100. Would leave the holster as is ( there is also a tear starting on the good loop ) or have repaired ?
Would you have the loose grip fixed ?

Don't worry about the mixed fonts. This was not unusual on Mausers made at this time. I think you did really well, considering an original, all matching BYF "Black Widow" rig with an extra magazine and tool, The mag and tool are worth $200+, the holster in that condition maybe $200. The holster is very late to be in brown, so it might possibly be a Luftwaffe issue. Jerry Burney here on the site could fix you holster like new and GT (Gerald Tomik) might be able to replace that magazine bottom.

They are original black bakelite WWII German issue grips. Nice rig! Great price! Leave the mags alone. They go with the condition of the gun and are probably original to the gun.

Guenter, thanks for the additional pictures. Your pistol's serial number is 3562d, not 3562a. It was completed about February 1942. It looks like a nice one. :)

I would snap this rig up at $1,100, (although I would try to negotiate it down further if possible).

I, dear sir, would jump on it like stink on poop. IE: I would be all over it. It, I am thinking, would cost more to find another one like this. Please keep us in the loop.
