Early DWM 30 Cal with Flip up sight
 

I have an early DWM 30 Cal Luger with a very unusual flip sight that flips forward and back with site notches on both sides. I have seen the navy flip sights and its not like them - totally different design. Wondering if anyones seen anything like this. Can post pics if I can figure out how.

Second, check out the stickies in the New Collectors' section. The answer to your question is right there!

Third, I'm thinking it's unlikely that what you're describing is anything produced by any manufacturer of original Lugers. Final judgment, however, will be established after the more experienced members check it out. Remember Lugers' reputation, that they are often more accurate than the people using them can take advantage of, and they are no stranger to competitive shooting--which may be the reason your sight was modified. Or perhaps for an owner who simply liked to shoot it and wanted different sights. The pics are necessary for any further interpretation/assessment.

What is the barrel length? If 7 inches this may be something rare and desirable...like from Chile!

Sounds like Jon is describing "express sights" rather than a tangent rear sight (navy type) as found on some of the Chilean guns. The express sights are usually found on rifles. Hope we can see some photos soon!

This is a decent gunsmith's clever contraption. Is the sight spring loaded to stay in place or does it rely on its mass?

It is a really nice looking Luger. It appears to be a 1908 version that some really talented gunsmith installed a slick flip-flop sight. It isn't an express sight but a totally original concept. I can't imagine needing a variable sight on a short barreled gun, but obviously someone thought it necessary. It is a neat example of ingenuity and workmanship.

I have the same question as Doug. What keeps it from flipping or flopping when the toggle cycles?

That's really neat. Never a flip up sight like that..
Perhaps a target shooter made one for 6 o`clock hold and one for centre of target.

I notice the Luger is without stock lug, does it have the 'hold open' function after last round is fired?

As Steinar pointed out, no stock lug...and no conventional rear sight...and 30 caliber...I can't see if it has an 'artillery notch'...

I too have seen several rebarrelled LPO8 with new 4" barrels but they still had the orig "sightless" LPO8 rear link. This may have been one gunsmith's solution to that problem. TH
