small pin under take down lever

Hello

I was wondering what the small 3/16'' of an inch diameter maybe smaller pin under the takedown lever does and if firing a luger without one is dangerous or harmful to the user and pistol.

the pin sits under the lever in the frame and 90's down through the trigger guard and the other end goes straight out of the side of the frame and sits flush with the round end of take down lever on the right side.

That's the detent spring. If you look closely at the takedown lever you will see a slot into which it fits in the closed position.

Without the spring in place, the takedown lever can freely rotate and move from locked to open. During recoil there is a mili-second when the takedown lever is not under pressure from the main spring and without the detent spring in place the take down lever can rotate and the gun will partially disassemble. Not a desirable situation.

Bottom line: the spring is essential.
