question on shooting

Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie to the Luger Forum, and I want to say first that this is a great forum! Lots and lots of great information.

Just bought my first vintage Luger, a 1918 DWM numbers matching (except of course the mag) and had the same concern with the barrel and rifling on my pistol. Looks very much like the pictures in this thread. After reading this thread I am a little less concerned about it.

I plan to go out to the range and fire a couple of mags to see how it performs. I am going to use Winchester 115 gr FMJ.

Any recommendations on solvents, brushes etc. to clean the build up in the bore? What about the ammo? Will the Winchester work fine?

I'll report back after the range session.

Thanks

Josep

Use any good solvent. Don't be afraid to use a brush. Clean as best you can before the range. Then do as you would breaking in a new rifle barrel. One round with dry swabbing between each. After 6-7, brush with solvent. Repeat as necessary. I have one worse than your's that does good groups.

This bore is not bad for C&R, I would not rate it poor. Poor bore has at least one hole that you can jump in :)

This one can be rated fair+ to good- IMO.

Thanks guys for the advice. I did as suggested and cleaned the bore with Hoppe's No. 9, and then fired one round. Clean some more then three rounds and finally four rounds. I tried four rounds at ten feet and four at twenty feet (indoor range). Quite accurate at both distances. The only issue was that the hold open did not work correctly. It works when I **** it with an empty mag, but not when fired. I suspect the mag, since it looks like a modern mag and spring seems a little weak to me.

Any ideas on this last issue?

Anyway, thoroughly enjoyed my Luger.

Thanks

Josep

Order a Mec-Gar mag and see what happens....

I got a Mec-Gar mag and that did the trick! Thanks for the advice. I checked the mags and the difference was in the diameter of the loading button. On the mag that did not work, it has a 7.62 mm diameter and on the Mec-Gar it is 9 mm in diameter.

Thanks again

Josep

I moved your postings from the previous thread to its own thread. It is easier to keep track of and makes more sense :)
