New Acquisition,1940-42
 

I just bought a 1940 Mauser Luger from a vet for $300.00. Has a side plate that does not match but other than that all other serials match. So cheap guns are still out there. Before anyone jumps on me for ripping the guy off, I paid what he was asking. Seems the local gun shop would not offer him that much. Came with a beautiful wood bottom mag. Not right of course but I collect them. Has not English made stamped on the right rail. Has a funny quirk. When fireing , it will not **** the fireing pin. If you pull the toggle back by hand , it will ****. Weird huh? The ammo is throwing the toggle back, it just dosen't **** on fireing. I guess it is slipping past the sear bar or something. The side plate whis is mismatched probably has something to do with it. It goes on very tight so I suspect it is putting too much pressure on. Great find anyway! Jerry Burney

Congratulations on the acquisition! There is a gun show in Birmingham next weekend do I'll be looking around too. Obvious that the toggle is not going back far enough or its too fast for it to engage. Have you given it a very good cleaning?

PS..check out the disconnector and it's spring..and the interface between it and the side plate assembly..that might be your problem.

Your Luger was sold commercially in England some time before 1955. Any firearm coming into England that had not originally been made there was subject to their commercial proof laws before it could be sold.

Yes I cleaned it completely. I believe the Shadow is close to the mark as I traded the sideplate for one off my Krieghoff and it worked much better. I believe the arm that interacts with the locking lever is too thick. It is 8 thousands thicker than the Krieghoff and the locking lever is way too tight. This might be pushing the connecting rod too close to the sear bar. It feels like the pistol has had a trigger job but I think this is a result of the sear bar being partially pushed in. I have to wonder why it does not go full auto? Jerry Burney

Have you checked to make absolutly sure that it is not cocked? I have found some Lugers with replaced side plates on which the Luger is acutally cocked after fireing but the sear plunger catches on the lever and remains depressed into the sear and therefore the lever has no surface on which to press on the sear bar. Sometimes adding a bit more bevel to the top rear edge of the lever will fix. After fireing--and if it does not appear to be cocked--remove and repalce the side plate with out working toggle again. Chances are it was cocked and will now fire. I recommend putting one dummy round in clip followed by one live for this test. This will place the dummy in chamber for the side plate test. Hope this helps you.
