Proof Mark ?'s
Well I just got done doing a full detailed disassembly-scrub, degunk, oil, and assembly on my new shooter p-08. I have to admit it was a total success everything went smoothly and I have no left over pieces or broken parts, even that pesky mainspring wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Though there were several times I wondered how many people have been killed by them flying out during disassembly/reassembly. But anyway back on topic the reason I made this post was I am wondering if anyone has seen this proofmark? I couldn't find it in the markings section though I may have missed something its on the left side of the barrel on my 1916 erfurt. It appears to be a crown over a stylized m, though the only crown over m I could find was the navy proof and this looks nothing like that. Thanks in advance for any help.

they look like spandua markings.
the m though- The naval acceptance mark consists of a straight sided Hohenzollern crown over a block letter M. An inspector's mark as found on issue parts would be a round sided king's crown over a script letter. cool thanks for posting pics |
Hmm.... spandau proofs on an erfurt thats interesting. Is it possible that the gun was reconditioned at spandau at somepoint? Or that maybe spandau had inspectors at erfurt to help with the workload?

thats a good question im curious myself. hopefully someone who knows something about lugers will answer that for us . :)

Hmm... maybe this really is something strange and nobody knows.

Here's some info on your inspectors proof. I found this on another forum.
The shape of the crown and letter M will tell if it is naval issue. The naval acceptance mark consists of a straight sided Hohenzollern crown over a block letter M. An inspector's mark as found on issue parts would be a round sided king's crown over a script letter Bob |
you should look at the thread beneath yours thats titled imperial markings I think it has some relevance

It is an Erfurt acceptance mark. The C/M on the DWM which can sometimes be seen on 1914 dated DWM has a 4 lobe crown.
Erfurt acceptance stamps have a 3 lobe crown and DWM has normally a 4 lobe crown, there are some exaptions on DWM luger from 1916 on. Pic 1 is Erfurt pic 2 is DWM |
It is worth repeating that "DWM" and "Erfurt" did not have stamps of any characteristics. These stamps were issued to army inspectors, and the specific designs of the crowns have no significance whatever.

http://forum.lugerforum.com/attachme...5&d=1331107034 If you look at the top pic (my luger) the stamp on the left and the stamp on the right appear to match the marks shown on Klaus' erfurt. The middle marking on the other hand appears different do each of these stamps have a significant meaning? ie. there are three marks does this mean that all 3 put together have a significant meaning? Or does it mean each mark is a separate inspection mark and that the gun passed through three different inspectors each with a different type of stamp? Also does each stamp by itself have a significant meaning? |
