Question on Type 3 Alumunum Bottom Magazine

At the Charlotte Gun Show today I picked up a Type 3 aluminum bottom magazine (From Jan Still, "Third Reich Lugers," page 126). It is in excellent condition, black extruded body marked E37 at the top, E37 and 122 at the bottom of the black tube. Bought it for $55.00.

The parts dealer had lots of gun parts but only a few Luger components, so I can sssume that he was probably not a Luger expert.

After buying the magazine I asked him why it was priced so low relative to his other Luger magazines. He said that was because the aluminum bottom only had a serial number (5006 o) and no E37 or any other proof mark.

It appears to me that mine is exactly like the one in Still's book which ALSO does not have a proof mark.

IS HE CORRECT IN HIS ASSUMPTION ?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Question on Type 3 Alumunum Bottom Magazine

I don't know what his assumption was, specifically, but if you can get a correct original 122 code mag (which it appears you did) then all is well. There should not be an E/37 on the bottom of the mag. I hope he has more mags as this is the kind of guy I like to buy from.

Re: Question on Type 3 Alumunum Bottom Magazine

Luke, The dealer who sold you the 122 code Schmeisser mag, may have thought that the aluminum bottom was an E Ger replacement. These are generally numbered with a larger than normal size die set and usually have a 1 or 2 over the serial. Also these bottoms are usually pinned off center. $55 is a fair price range for these, and definately a bargain for one that is all orig WW2. Tom h

Re: Question on Type 3 Alumunum Bottom Magazine

Except for the actual serial number, this one looks exactly like the one in Jan Still's book, including both extruded tube and aluminum bottom. Size and placement of the markings are identical to the Still picture.

Thanks for the comments.

E/37 on Base

Hi,

There is a variation of the 122 magazines that does have the E/37 on the base. It can be found in either of two places -- on the upper portion of the magazine or in the middle by the serial number. These were issued with the 1940/42 Lugers and can be found up until about the E block, so No suffix through the E-block there is such a thing.

Re: E/37 on Base

Wow--have you got a pic or scan of the base on an E/37 inspected (base stamp) mag? I could really use such a photo for my reference--I have never seen one.

Your comments convince me this one is authentic. Thanks. (EOM)
