Unusual Holster
 

These have been discussed before in 2009. Klaus was trying to find the origin. Seems some were manufactured and some were converted WWI holsters during the Weimar Era. This one is a converted WWI holster. There is enough of the manufacturer's name to determine it was originally made by E. G. Leuner Bautzen. Simpson has one currently for sale ($495). Some have the 1934 time frame rod holder on the tool pouch. Some like this one have only a tool pouch. Does anyone have any idea who these were made/converted for? There are too many around to just be a lark. Maybe Weimar Police Unit? Would be nice to figure these out. Thanks for the help.

I had been eyeballing a similar one on ebay this past week but decided to not make a move on it due to various issues requiring repair:

I found a photo of a similar one with description suggesting it was a Swiss or Swiss Conversion. See the round hold down attachment stitching indicative of Swiss holsters. I just went back through both of Bender's books I have and cannot relocate the reference. I will post it if I find out where I saw it.

It is shown in Benders last book on page 200. It only says an unusual holster ,military converted to commercial. I for one do not think these were commercial. But I seem to be wrong as much as right. The holster shown is the one listed by you from eBay after a few easy repairs. Main thing wrong it needed a new closure strap and repairing a belt loop. Bill

Apologies as the reference I couldn't find was the prose on one offered on the SimpsonLTD site: "Unmarked. Takedown tool pouch under flap. Bender shows this style of holster on the cover of his book and identifies it as a Swiss 1930's modified holster. This particular holster is not modified and I am sure it is Swiss or possibly German Imperial period commercial. Original dark brown leather all original stitching intact. Overall condition Very Good-Excellent., "

Bender's Luger Holsters & Accessories of the 20th Century indeed has a photo on page 200 with a description "German Oddball Conversion".

It is indeed also on the cover of the same book and the inside jacket identifies it as a "1930's Swiss Commercial Conversion".

In retrospect, I've been about as much help as a glass eye here. Hope others can provide some insight.

Interesting holster...Too bad it was 'cowboyized'... :(

If this is a modified Swiss commercial what Swiss luger would fit in it? It will only fit a 4 inch barrel which I believe eliminates the Swiss made or purchased lugers.

I lean towards Police.

All of these with the large lid have been "cowboyized"including the new manufactured ones. The manufactured ones eliminated the pull up strap. Someone went to a lot of expense making new lids for conversions or new manufactured. Had to be some reason. Too many of them to be a whim. Bill

Bill, I don't recall the source, but recall reading that these were original WW1 issue hoster for the Walther Mod 6, that were later converted to use with the PO8. TH

I also read the same thing somewhere? I am quite sure this was not a Walther #6 holster. Mine was definately an original ww1 luger holster converted. Some I have seen pictures of were converted artillery holsters. A couple others had the 1934 era rod holder type tool pouch. Don M feels these were for some Police unit.( see his thread on Luger forum that he lists above) Maybe someday we will find out? Anyway they are an interesting holster. Tom, you may be thinking of the holsters that were designed for the 9-mm Dreyse and sold to the Prussian Landgendarmerie. These holsters are stamped L.G. inside and many were converted for use with police P08s since the Landgendarmerie apparently canceled its order for the Dreyses. I have seen (erroneous) speculation that these converted holsters were originally for Walther M6s.
