Looking to buy this Luger P08
 

Hello guys, I am looking at a P08 Luger that has 95% original bluing and straw color. It is all matching including BOTH magazines, except for the extractor. It is a a S/42 code, with nazi proofs. The holster is very nice with the take down tool, and has a 1937 stamp which the gun itself has.

The owner wants 3500, I was wondering if this is a fair price, any input would be greatly appreciated.

Is the extractor numbered or blank, and is it properly finished and fitted?
I'm thinking that the price is a bit high, certainly no bargain, and would like to see close-ups of both mags numbers and the gun's numbers.
Will the seller provide photos?

For that kind on money, you really need to extensively photograph the pistol and post here, if you can. 1937 was a transition year for Rust Blueing, Straw to Salt Blueing. What is the gun's complete serial number, including any letter suffix? Can you also photograph both magazine bottoms, as well as the gun's main serial number on the frame below the barrel?

I would research this completely before making an offer. I also agree with David that in this market, this is really top, top dollar for an all-matching rig.

This may also be a Police rig, with force matched magazines, which would not command anywhere near the asking price.

Rob, sounds like you're looking at a 1937 S/42 luger that appears to be fully priced. Before I would part with that "top dollar" I would demand to be allowed to take photos to post here. There could be several pitfalls that could greatly depreciate the value, such as the replacement extractor and the possibility of forced matched magazines.

Rob..Good advice above..If you have 3500 bucks to spend expand your search. There are a lot of nice pistols out there for that much money.

Thanks for the advice, I thought the price seemed a bit high. Well more than a bit. The serial number is 2652. Where would the number be on the extractor, and how can I tell its properly fitted? And yes, the owner is a dealer. This will be my first Luger purchase, I have been looking for quite some time. I am however not new to collector firearms, I have P38's and other WWII pistols in my collection. What would be a fair price for this rig in your opinion guys?

The last 2 digits of the serial number should be stamped on the top of the extractor, visible just below the chamber date.
If you want to do some research, look at Simpson Ltd. Also a bit high $ but good honest dealers.

The Extractor is numbered 62, and yes its finish matches the gun. One of the magazines has another marking that the other does not right above the waffen stamp is a marking that looks like a cross but it is below what looks like a cursive s. The dealer claims it is a consignment gun and they will not go below 3500, so I am gonna look elsewhere. I found a Luger p08 same outfit, two matching mags, holster and a gun that has every part matching for 3000. Do you guys think that is a good price? Thanks for all of the help guys.

The cross indicates the spare magazine, which would have been stored in the holster. A cursive S is either part of the serial number, in which case, both magazines should have the identical marking or it is an added mark which cannot be identified without a photo, as there are several "S" markings.

Have you thought of posting in the Want to Buy section of this forum. I think in time you will find what you are looking for at prices that are reasonable. It would seem that you are looking at dealers with extreme prices. David

I think you will find with Lugers that the less knowledgable the dealer, the higher the price. Every small time gun shop that gets a Luger in thinks they have Adolf Hitler's personal gun.
