...the cable/satellite channel that did a show about the Luger's history and development? It was mentioned in a post some months ago. I'm trying to find it on Netflix or Hulu, so I can watch it. History channel? Discovery channel?

"Tales of the Gun" had a Luger episode. I think this was The History Channel.

Yes, I found it and just finished watching. I noticed their animation of function is incorrect, in that they depict the next round jumping up into line with the chamber before the breechblock starts its return, rather than the block's stripping it from the top of the mag and the cartridge making the s-turn it actually takes to get into battery. Narration said that the empty is tossed out by a spring, which is also incorrect.

Otherwise entertaining and kinda fun to watch; I missed it when it aired on TV. (Now I know what Ralph Shattuck and Fred Datig looked like 10-15 years ago.) Thanks to all who provided info.

The empty is ejected by the ejector, which is a spring. What am I missing?

Oops! I had what is called a "Senior Moment" (brain f**t)...and confused the ejector, which is indeed tempered to be a spring, with the hold-open, which does have a spring. The springy aspect of the extractor comes into function when the action cycles back into battery. On recoil, the ejector pops out after the breech block clears it, and its effect in ejecting the empty is due to the fact that it shows up at the right time and place to give the lower area of the spent shell's rim a little flick. The combination of this flick and the extractor's grasp, which acts to allow the shell to pivot up, and then out, as it departs the influence of the extractor's hook. So, strictly speaking, the ejection is accomplished when the ejector is actually at rest, un-flexed, not loaded, it's springy action already completed. This also led to my response's inaccuracy!
