What should I offer for S/42 1939 luger (UPDATED)
 

I have a chance to buy a matching S/42 1939 luger in 90% condition and the 2 problems are:

after marked grips
mismatched mag

I am wondering what would be a fair offer.

If I were to get this gun do you think I should try to find the original grips for it? (They were probably numbered and will be mismatched anyway)

Having mismatched mag and repro grips does that make that pistol a shooter grade?

Steve, To Me Personally A mis match mag no way makes a shooter. Aftermarket grips really hurt it.

Mike the seller has another 1940 S/42 luger that is all matching in 90% condition with a mismatched mag.

For the argument sake if all matching value was $2000 how much would you discount the mismatched mag?

I am not sure since I don't have my reference books with me, but didn't the change from "S/42" to "42" concealment code take place in 1939 (April)?

If that is true, either the toggle is mismatched, or it's something rather rare...

If it's a mismatch, I'd be careful with this dealer since it may have been mis-represented.

His price for a 90% Luger seems quite high to me. If it's all correct, and not rather rare it should be in the $1500-$1600 range at most.

Repro grips can be changed to original (blank, eagle 655, etc) and would be a lot easier than mismatched other parts?

Offer what you are comfortable with, ask 50 people and you will get 50 different opinions.

mreric is on it. For $2000.00 you surely could find a really nice P.08 I Mean Really Nice. I would stay away from a S/42 1940 because a 1940 should be a 42 code. If you want a matched mag the price is always alot more but it's unusual to find a matched mag P.08. Check your proofs and suffix. You can't deduct for a matched mag you add.
Keep an eye on the WTS on the forum I have had nothing but great dealings when I'm looking to add to my collection.

I just spoke to the seller and he is asking $900 for it.
How much are the blank, eagle 655 girps?
Is it a difficult proposition?

Does it have these grips by any chance?

If so, there is a good chance that you are looking at an East-German 'VoPo' P08.
These were rebuilt / renovated in the 1950s for use by the East-German police and military.

1939 mausers were issued with both S/42 and 42 codes. S/42 are harder to find due to less numbers made. If this is an original finish all matching except grips and mag $ 900 is a good price. Bill

No these are no the types of grips that it has.
The ones he had were the yellow type grips that I saw a picture of here on this forum but I can't seem to find them anymore.
After that he bought a repro grips.
I will be looking at the gun in 10 days or so....

Steve..Better start finding out all you can in these ten days you have. $900 is a good price for the right pistol but a bad price for one that's not right.

Go to you tube and study how to take a luger apart. That's a good start towards looking at one.

Very good advice, I will definitely do as much homework as I can.
I was thinking of offering about $700 just to be closer to a safer side.

Not too bad..they pop up pretty often. I would say $75-100 for a good pair.

I ended up buying 1939 S/42 Luger so I am going to upload few pictures.
I now need to find grips and actually find out what they should be marked as? Eagle 63?
What do you think the grips need to be marked as?

Also I have to say that I am not too bright when it comes to figuring out what a sear safety is.

If you have grips for sale that I am looking for please let me know.

PS Bore is shiny and all numbers match inside. I also need to figure out which tool is correct for the gun. Droop Eagle 63? or maybe S/42 marked one?

Hi Steve, If you bought this gun for $900.00 you did very well indeed. The finish looks original and 1939 S/42s are one of the harder variations to find. Since finding correctly numbered grips is next to impossible, try to find armorer's replacements, which would be stamped SE/63, 42 or both. The correct tool would also be marked SE/63. Regards, Norm
