Information on 1917 Artillery Luger and holster?

Wondering if anyone can give me a brief history of my rig? Is the holster real? I know the magazine is not the right one? What grade would you rate this weapon? What value would you put on this set?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. Nice Pistol. If I may suggest something; You have active rust in several areas of your pistol. (areas like the checkering of the takedown lever). I recommend that you take fine brass wool or a brass brush and brush these areas with a light oil, Also, the grips look like they have recently been cleaned with a powerful solvent. They need to be treated with lemon oil or other wood preservative. Your gun and (possibly) the stock look original.

The leather holster and straps, etc, your takedown tool and your cleaning rod all look like reproductions from your photo.

The stock is a Pakistani reproduction.

Can anyone grade this weapon and give me an insurance value? Thanks!

George Anderson 09-24-2011 10:11 PM

Given the condition of the 1917 LP08 I would say you should insure it for $2000, The magazine is worth $200 and the stock, holster and pouch are worth $150. Selling prices would be lower.

Shawn, I value the opinion of my associate George Anderson but have to respectfully disagree with his overly optismistic price structure on the pistol and magazine. My analysis is based on several things all condition related.

Your pistol IMO has been reblued. The inside frame rails appear to be blued and they should be in the white. Maybe it is the photography but they sure look blued to me.

The trigger guard is pretty mangled/dented. So is the left side of the pistol. These two faults pretty much drop the value to right at a shooter level IMO.

The FXO magazine is poor finish too and in this economy I would value your mag at $100-125. I have seen really nice ones selling recently at $185

Jerry and George thank you for your help and information!

How can one tell the holster is a reproduction?

From years of observing originals. Pakistani leather reproductions are aged with some sort of acid bath, which gives the leather an odd look. They usually smell strange as well, (you might try this test; Smell your leather and it should smell sour, versus like old leather). Details like the poor stitching and wrinkled look of the tool pouch and the poor job on the "ears" of the cleaning rod pouch cover all indicate a recent copy. The stock is the wrong type of wood and the poor metal to wood fitting show it to be a copy as well.

maximis026986 01-22-2013 02:01 PM

Thank you for your info. How recent do you believe this copy is?

alanint 01-22-2013 02:54 PM

No more than 15 years old. The big influx of these was in the mid, late 1990's

maximis026986 01-22-2013 07:18 PM

Well it's been sitting in a box for over 40 years, maybe a 1970s reproduction?

George Anderson 01-22-2013 07:29 PM

I have always thought that they were imported at about the same time as the Persian contract Lugers. I think this would put them in the 1970's.

So when did the Persian Lugers land here? Dribble in or major purchase/resale? Did our buddy the Shah relelase them? Almost smells of a Sam Cummins deal.
