Mag with number on back?

I have recently found this mag, never seen this before. No number and none stamps on the wood bottom.
Does anybody knows more?

although I agree with Howard that it is likely police, there was a short period of time that it was mandated that army unit weapon numbers be marked on the magazine, and this could very well be one of those.

The time period was brief, early 1920's if I remember correctly.

But my 1st impression is police.

Here's an Imperial Navy mag numbered on the tube. It's thought to be a unit number. Regards, Norm
