7.63 Mauser in Luger??
on Youtube, the gunsmith (German, I'm guessing) Waffenwerle
shows loading 6 rounds of 7.63 Mauser in a Luger mag and it works! Theres another video of him actually shooting an Artillery he converted to 7.63....I guess it would just just take running a 7.63 Mauser reamer thru a 7.65 Luger chamber....tempting idea, but seems a little scary from a safety standpoint! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks42h...yer_detailpage |

Martz might be able to make a 30 Mauser Luger...Maybe even Rick W. ... ;) I don't think the top of the grip frame would allow a 30 mauser to pass either... Bar-Sto used to offer a 38 Super barrel for the S&W Model 52...but it would only fire a wadcutter seated to the edge of the case rim... I suppose you could do the same with the 30 Mauser in a Luger...Seat a wadcutter bullet flush with the case rim...It should feed then... |
well, check out the video.....it feeds! And if you watch the other video from him, he fires 6 rounds with no stoppages. The rounds are at an extreme angle, but a mag loaded with 6 of them will slide up and lock in the mag well....yeah, curiosity got the best of me, I tried it! Of course, I didn't try to cycle a round.

The pistol is semi-automatic. The .30 Mauser actually works, but it feeds at a steeper angle. I'm sure that some serious work on the magazine follower was needed, but you can always contact Herbert Werle yourself. Magazine capacity is probably less due to the steeper angle.

I thought it would be educational to try this...Below is a pic of my GT modified Mec-Gar mag with a 30 Mauser in it...It won't go down any further...The spring keeps pushing it up...I can't fit it into the Luger because the bullet nose jams on the magazine release (or on the edge of the mag release hole)...
I don't get YouTube here but as Vlim says, that Luger (*IF* it is firing 30 Mauser rounds and not 30 Luger rounds) has been modified beyond just re-chambering...A custom follower with a steeper angle might work...I suspect the chamber rim would need tweaking too... But if you're really interested, I have a 30 Mauser chambering reamer and would be happy to ream your Luger barrel to take the Mauser cartridge...then you could buy some steel case Tokarev ammunition and have a real vest penetrator!!! :D |
try loading the mag with 3 or 4 rounds and see what happens...the angle of the top round will increase, and the mag can be inserted

here ya go....quick iPhone pics...this is also a Mec Gar....it easily slides into the mag well.....whether it feeds or not is a secret known only to Herr Werle for now!

But I see what you mean now...and I see you've already got the 7.62 Tokarev cartridges... Mail me your barrel/receiver assembly; I'll hog that sucker out!... |
hahaha Post..thanks for the generous offer!.....I'd never shoot Tok ammo, but the Mauser is tempting....it might be a project for the future when my body parts are worn out enough I can spare risking them ;)

This is one of Werle's Lugers??? Per Vlim's suggestion, maybe Herbert Werle will tell you what needs to be done to make this work...I'd be interested in knowing... ;) |
Me too....if it's a safe conversion, that 7.63 in a 6 or 8in barrel would make a flat shooting field pistol.

I don't have any comparisons of the 7.65 Luger round vs the 7.63 Mauser...It would be interesting to see chamber pressure, velocity, volume, etc... The only quick reference I have uses two different powders and two different bullet weights...but it looks like the 30 Mauser wasn't all that much different in velocity...1210 vs 1300 '/sec... Edit - I was wrong; I do have a comparison of sorts...My 45th Edition Lyman Reloading handbook lists both cartridges, with the same three powders and two identical bullets... (Dunno what year this was...but it's old...) |
Bob, Lyman's data seems to suggest that with like bullets & powder, there is little difference between the two... :(
|
Yeah, I've noticed that in the latest ed. of the Lee manual, too, the Mauser and Luger loads are close, maybe because Lee has some 93gr Luger loads maxed out at 1340fps! The only big advantage would be at the Tokarev load level, and I wouldn't wanna try that in a Luger. I chrono'ed some Polish ammo out of my CZ52 that was going 1610fps !

Somewhat surprising, to me anyway, as I always thought the 30 Mauser was supposed to be a hot load...Maybe the original military load was, but these three powders don't seem especially hot... |
