Firing pin spring guide
I have a 1916 DWM. Cocking my pistol, the spring guide pops out. I noticed the "lug" is severely worn. Can I get a replacement guide? Do I need a replacement for the firing pin also. I read one post here that said, for shooters, the WW I firing pin should be replaced with a vented WW II firing pin. I am reluctant to shoot with modern ammunition.

S, I do have several exc orig PO8 FP retainers (spring guides) available @$25 each or new postwar Mauser ones @$20 + $3 S&H. I doubt that this will solve your problem --- sounds like you blew out the rear of your breech block (the hole should be perfectly round). TH

On the parts diagram they show 010 but there is no description in the list. Is 010 the breech block? I will post pictures of the parts if I can get them in an acceptable format. Lots to learn here besides gun stuff! I do not think the breech block hole is round, but please let me know if it is acceptable for a shooter, or needs replacement. It does have a matching number and proof mark. I also noticed after removing the pin, it is very loose, just falls out now. Guess it was the crud holding it in place.

Here are some pictures just to clarify the parts. I apologize for the poor quality. I'll get the hang of this eventually. First thing I noticed was the spring guide doesn't look like the one in the diagram, doesn't have the long taper. Let me know what you can tell from my lousy pictures. Thanks.

I can't tell much from the photos, but it looks like the back of the breech block has been split away, and the retaining pin is broken off about 1/3 of the way.
The firing pins on newer Lugers (Mauser, etc) had fluted spacing in the front of the outside of the firing pin to prevent this kind of damage. It allowed overpressure gasses to escape rather than blow the retainer off the back of the breech block. Marc |
