My Newly Acquired byf 41, 60%-70%
 

Well I was so thrilled to finally get a Luger after wanting one since I was 7 years old. I have bought some books and read at a number of forums and conclude:
I have probably one of the most produced, boring and least disireable Luger ever made. And that makes sad...

Hi Steven, There is no such thing as a boring military Luger. Your gun undoubtedly saw service in WW2, it's a piece of history to be proud of. Best regards, Norm

And the most produced and boring was the 1940 / 42 and i have one at home, and any luger has a lot of history!

I see that there is being shown as a rare Mauser that is a BYF 1941. You might do a search and find that item and see how yours matches up.
Perhaps you will owe your new purchase an apology?

byf 41 Variations
 

The rarity lies in the waffenampts. From Jan Still http://luger.gunboards.com/showthread.php?t=22701 :

The right receiver acceptance stamps determine byf 41 markings variations. They are as follows:
SE655 SE655 LTP reported serial range 4636o-4627ns (estimated production 120,300)
SE655 SE135 LTP reported serial range 4801ns-7491ns (estimated production 2,700)
SE135 SE135 LTP reported serial range 7478ns-1121b (estimated production 14,500)

"SE" stands for "stick eagle". "ns" stands for "no suffix". "LTP" stands for "late test proof".

If you have a SE655 SE135 or a SE135 SE135, you have a rarer variation than the SE655 SE655.

Ain't that the dying truth? I have several of Jan Still books, Costanza and others. I'm flabbergasted by the prices they seem to bring.

Third Reich Lugers
 

Hope is on the horizon... Jan Still is preparing a revision to "Third Reich Lugers".

May be out in a few months, his last releases were available for just under a hundred bucks (of course past performance is no guarantee of future results ;) ).

Your serial number appears to be out of the range of the third variation. Serial no. 2917 ns looks like it belongs in the SE655 SE655 range. Can you post pictures?

That's what I though too. So I put on my Optivisor to make sure I was reading the marks corrrectly. My Crashtimatic camera will not take close ups of these tiny stamps. I shall try at any rate.

Serial no. is 9217 ns. Sorry for my dislexia.
