French Foreign Legion..

I don't know if this post is authorized on the Forum...
14 Juillet, French National Day.
This is a short extract of the traditional Military Parade, 2009, in Paris ( French TV2 channel report, from Youtube). Wonderful views of Champs-Elysees Avenue and Place de la Concorde. And of course, the legendary French Foreign Legion. Impressive as usual.

Very interesting...I'm intrigued by the concept of the woodsman's axes on parade! And what is the purpose/significance of what appears to be leather aprons worn by this fighting force?

George Anderson 07-13-2011 06:16 PM

They are combat engineers unless I am mistaken.

The very best of the best, Combat Engineers. Every Legionaire is a Soldier first, last and always. I sleep well knowing that they are on my six and pray that they are always there for us. No politics, just some of the finest fighters in the world. Adieu, Mon Ami.

Christan Very Very impressive.

I have known a few former Legionaires over the years including a Pole who jumped into Dien Bien Phu with the other volunteers.

The one word all use to describe legion service-"Brutal"

Much harder to join than in the past. There is a long psych evaluation period designed to test one's ability to deal with the reality of the life.
No longer criminals and fugitives, but folks of sterner stuff.
Americans do not tend to do well.

There is some real nasty stuff behind all the percieved glamour.

They even have a special march tempo which represents marching through deep sand.

Happy Bastille Day to all our French allies!!! :D

I will watch "Beau Geste" on DVD tonight and have a brew in honor...
