Hi!!! Need Help with gift for my Dad.
 

Hi everyone. Im new to the forum, and basically here to find a gift my dad has been searching for forever now. He is not to internet savy so I told him I would help him find his missing Luger piece. Anyways, My father has a 1939 Luger Pistol. He is looking for a Magazine/Clip with the matching number of 1601 to complete it. The larger pieces on his gun have a serial number of 1601, and the smaller have 01 if that helps identify the exact gun. If anyone can help me out please let me know. To make it match correctly, the magazine will have a suffix letter under the serial number as (in all probably), does the Luger. I know this furthur complictes your search, but there are members on this forum including yours truly who have been trying to match mag to Luger for years with little or no success. I have a list of hundreds of Luger magazine serial numbers. Give me the suffix and I will see if yours is on that list.

Your chances of finding this exact serial number is very remote. In all my years of collecting, I have seen it happen only 6 or 7 times and only once for myself.

It would be much easier to find a period replacement, i.e same time period and either the same suffix or close.

That would still make a nice gift :)

Yes i kinda understand this....I got in touch with my dad after the first reply to get the suffix letter. I know though that he is just looking for a clip with the number 1601 on it to match up with the gun. It does not have to be the guns "exact" magazine unless each gun has a clip specifically made for that specific gun. I know less than my dad, and he is by no means a collector or expert. He was just under the impression that it shouldnt be too hard to find a clip numbered 1601. He may be completely wrong??? I understand matching the suffix and the number makes it nearly impossible, but again, I know that he is just looking for that 1601 numbered clip. Hope that helps, and again I may be way off. I definately appreciate the responses and hope Im getting closer. I will post the suffix when he gets it to me sometime this morning. Thanks Guys!

There is a guy on GunBroker.com named Rich [username: rwc] who frequently lists Luger mag bottoms...He might be able to help you...

Or...there is a magazine expert on this Forum who goes under the name of GT...he makes mag bottoms...from scratch...and has some mag tubes as well...he might be able to 'force match' a mag for your dad... ;)

My Luger is a Mauser dated 1939 with the number "42" on the toggle. Serial number is 1601 with "u" suffix. I know some magazines have had the aluminum knob sanded down and new numbers inscribed. The magazine that I currently have with the gun is 6914 h. It's my understanding that there were two magazines produced per gun. Let me know what you find out.

Yes, what he says is true. However, in looking for serial numbers for my lugers, I have matched one correctly and one with the same number (a DDR magazine) for a Simson gun, not correct at all.

but my point is, unless you have one force matched, a no-no in the luger collecting world, for the simple reason is that 20 years from now, will it get sold as an 'all matching' gun?

So that said, as a collector, i say find one that is period correct and feel good about it.

As a non-collector, there are guys that will mark them for you, however, most I have seen, and especially a 'sanded' bottom, looks like heck, and is obvious.

I understand. He just wants one that has the number 1601. doest matter if its z, p, q or whatever. He just wants a 1601. Not a sanded off one either or refurbished. An original with the number 1601.

I have a list on the side of my computer screen with my Lugers serials and EVERY magazine I come accross... and that's a bunch, I look every day in a lot of places..for 15 years I have not even come close. Weird but true. I wouldn't want to give even odds on finding one for your Father's birthday! Or the next ten really...
BUT! You might get lucky...

Then contact GT and he can fabricate a quality aftermarket magazine with the number you desire.

Seeking, wanting, wishing..all ain't getting. I agree..a GT mag would fill the bill UNTIL an all original is available. Or IF ...

Oh well....I guess I never figured it would be that difficult! One things for sure is that this has peaked my personal interest and I kinda want my own luger now. Thanks for all the replies guys!

You have to understand that for every 10,000 lugers produced in 1939 as well as the other years there would only be two 1601 magazines. A 1601 magazine and a 1601+ magazine.

This is not my first rodeo. I have been collecting Lugers since 1959 and know full well the serial number process. I have a copy of Don Hallock's magazine list and thought by chance there might be a match. He does have a 40-42 1603c. Close.

I have been trying to find a K Dated Luger Magazine, any number will do for years, and still I have not find one. Let alone with the number of my K date Lyger:p
