"All matching" doesn't mean "all original"
Based on the number of WTB notices looking for specifically numbered side plates and other numbered components, I have come to the conclusion that "all matching" is not synonymous with "all original" and that this is generally accepted by the collecting community. Sad! :crying:

Gee Don! Another illusion shattered. First it was the Tooth Fairy, then Santa Claus, sometime later the Extra Virgin, and now this, the all matching Luger. Where will it all end? Best regards, Norm

I Concur Don.
My Lugers only match the shape of my hand to the Grip... and they hit where I point them, so I still love'em. |
My first girlfriend swore she was a vigin till she wound up pregnant and not from me, and 'The check is in the mail!!!

One can only hope that this was not while you were dating her, Eric!

But if one finds an original matching part for his Luger, the part is original, so, all matching and original.

Well, it's the market after all.
If the market is prepared to pay extra for a fully matching 'original' gun, then the sellers will supply them. Same goes for 'matching' magazines and 'full matching rigs'. |
A couple of years ago, a friend of mine bought a luger from a dealer; when he got it, it was missing the number and proof on the safety bar if I remember correctly.
He decided against it and sent it back. But it seemed to acquire the correct number and proof a few weeks later... Ed |

OK, here is the other side of the coin..? I brought in a Mauser Banner police the other day in excellent condition. A vet's grandson brought it in for his grandmother, as she didn't want it in the house any longer, along with some other bring-back items. The banner was in stunning all original condition (along with the police holster) and everything matched EXCEPT the hold open, which was ONE diget off (26 instead of 27)..
So, what's more important - original or matched? We collectors are a fickle bunch ;) Best to all..!!!! John D. |

Not talking about Chinese/Numrich [same thing] parts...but "original" DWM/Simson/Mauser/Krieghoff/Erfurt parts... If the part is original...isn't the pistol "original"??? |
I got a 1910, unit marked to 1st Uhlans. I've owned it 45 years.
The hold open is replaced. It's a mismatch as far as I'm concerned. Original and matching same - same for my era. Armourer replacement is just that-replacement. I would not devalue it a lot for such a small thing, but I would point it out to a buyer. |

Agree especially with your last statement. I feel we are so enamoured with all matching that if a firing pin or holdopen etc is mismatched it immediately becomes the dreaded " Shooter". Our demand for totally matching and perfect finish is what creates the fakers market. And I believe many of our all matching, perfect finish lugers are fakes. Bill |
