Holster help needed
 

I just picked up a Mauser 42 marked 1940 Luger and it came with this holster. Anyone have any ideas about it or who made it?

Not sure who made it or the year it was manufactured, but it is a reworked LP 08 holster. The bottom was cut off in order to shorten the length to accomadate a 4" Luger barrel and the stitch holes located just below where the lid closes, was the location of the original LP 08 strap. The reworking of LP 08s was quite common during the Weimar period. It was cheaper to change the larger, no longer needed holsters then to make new ones. There a number of different variations of style as how the barrel length of the LP 08 holster were altered.

I am inclined to believe that it was not an LP08 holster but rather a police holster. We need to see photos of the back and the leading edge where the magazine pouch is mounted.

Would the LP-08 holster have the same style/length (or any) drawstrap as a P-08 holster???

Here are some more photos. I'm not sure if this is what you wanted for the leading edge for the mag.

I agree with George,

There is no stitch hole evidence of the horizontal strap which is on the back of all artillery holsters. I say a police as well.

Hard to see because it's out of focus, but that could be two rows of stitching inside the magazine pouch where the cleaning rod enclosure was removed as well.

It looks like a skillful rework. Even the hole on top of the flap where the LP-08's strap stud looks like it was repaired.

I saw an interesting police modification of a pigskin LP-08 1917 dated holster today that was no where near as skillfully done.

Need an exterior shot of the full height of the holster with the mag pouch square in the front. That is to say the leading edge or right front of the holster.

Actually I think it was both:

Artillery -> Police -> Military ...

Started life as an LP08 holster.

Yes it did.

And then it became a police style holster, as a stud was added to the lid (which wasn't present on an artillery).

Afterwards the closure strap + stud were removed and an army style buckle strap was added. So 3 conversions in one lifetime.

Thanks for all the info. It's amazing that they had went to the trouble 3 times to rework this holster. I know that in today's throwaway world it would have landed in a land fill.
