History Lesson - Thumb Safety Position ?

Could someone give me a history lesson on the "safe-up" versus "safe-down" position of the thumb safety ?

Does this feature align with the classic luger variations ? Or did changes occur with year the luger was manaufactured ? Or a signature feature of who built the luger ?

Finally, what position is preferred by Collectors ?

Appreciate your help...

Re: History Lesson - Thumb Safety Position ?

According to Fred Datig in his book 'The Luger Pistol' on page 113 he states essentially that for the model 1908 and onward, the grip safety was discarded in favor of the thumb safety. At this time the safety lever was changed from the 'up' position for the grip safety, to the down position for the thumb safety. Of course there may be some variations to this modification, but that is his analysis. I'm getting careful in my posts on Luger subjects as there is always a variation to the norm. Don't want to get anyone excited with the facts.
