help with strange weld on luger barrel
 

Hi Guys

I am in the UK and as you know we are only allowed to own deactivated firearms here:crying: I have the chance to buy this 1939 Mauser it seems to be matching but something seems strange with the underside of the barrel could you take a look and give me some advice please

From what I can tell from blown-up & lightened copies of your pics, the barrel bottom may have been welded to the receiver & then ground down to allow cycling...???...

I agree with Rich, (Postino) The barrel has been welded to the receiver, Probably as a means of preventing reactivation..

They will resize, but only if larger than allowed and they would not be this small.

My guess is that the photo's you have are small.

You can email me if you desire, but if they are huge pictures, I will have to delete them, since I am on small bandwidth here in Iraq

Dosen't look welded but beat flat with a hammer? Hard to see but you already know that. You might want to see if you can get a photo woth the top off. take the pistol apart to see it more clearly.

Why Own Them..???....you cant shoot them.!!!....looks to me like they just make expensive doorstops......Deactivating a firearm to me is one of the dumbest things a government can do...destroying sometimes Beautiful Historical firearms.....Museum Quality......This policy is ..only topped by
Australia confiscating allllll firearms.....then cutting them in two...........all these policies do is just make the criminals...crooks....thugs.....whatever you want to call them......extremely happy...........I mean....what are you gonna do....point a deactivated firearm at em when they come thru the door......holler.....BANG..!!:mad:

Just to explain the last guys reply on why would we want to own one? Well given the chance we would all like to own a live luger but over the last 30yrs the uk has become a country of over reaction just a couple of shootings here and all live firearms are to be banned
You can't even go to a gun club in the uk today and fire historic weapons such as mg42 mg34s or Lugers and yes the great British government that over reacted and banned handguns now has more live guns on the streets in the hands of gangs and bad guys than ever

But I am happy to collect Lugers that I can only display rather than not at all count yourself lucky that you can have a live one and take into the back yard and fire a few rounds off

You’re in the right place to ask questions. I understand the forum is for collectors. I’ve used the reams of research held & tapped the collective knowledge of members many times.

If you’ve a desire to shoot one or two - I’ve the odd one or two left behind by the Germans. If you should wish to cross from the big island to our little Island – you are most welcome to shoot one. The MG34 may need some prior notice!

I have known German deacts to be carried out in this manner. The receiver is ground slightly so as to give a thinner section to tack weld after cross drilling into the chamber. UK deactivated are not normally visible without stripping.
Collectors around the world have no problem putting an all matching rig in a safe never to be fired for fear of breaking a numbered part.........Why make an issue of someone who will do the same thing with a deact because they don’t have a choice. I think it displays a profound appreciation of the firearm.
As a holder of an Australian FL, I can say the previous statement regarding the confiscation of all firearms in Australia is untrue. Whilst the regulations are tight, most firearms are legal to own provided you have a clean background and a reasonable cause. All pistols below 50 cal are legal. Firing a pistol outside a designated range is illegal. Ownership of any semi –auto rifle/shotgun, and all full auto rifles are illegal.
