"slight frosting"
 

I am older than dirt and have seen this description so many times. What are the various shades of 'frosting" and what does it really mean. I understand "pitting".

I actually think "frosted" is a very useful adjective. It describes a condition mid-way between "mint" and "pitted". Regards, Norm

The only worn condition I can think of is when the lands are bright & shiny and the grooves are rough looking...like concrete...

When someone says 'frosted' I always think of a whitish appearance...

Ever clean a rusty bore using chemicals?
It will be free of rust but look just like frost on a window pane in the winter.
I think that is where it came from originally but, I see it used to describe exterior finishes also, it comes down to "rust" or pitting.


It might also describe the feel of frost as you run your fingers over it, but I never thought of it that way.

I just purchased a luger that "some frosting in the barrel from corrosive powder" is how the seller described it and I agree. It seems to have an area with a host of very tiny pits that together create a hazy or frosty look.
That's my 3 cents worth and Oh yes, keep the change if any be due.
