Police Banner with Black Polymer grips

I would like to ask the question about if some Police Banners
came with the black polymer grips and fxo magazines.
A:bowdown:bout two years ago i bought a Police Mauser at the Tulsa
Gunshow. It was a 42 E/L that had black polymer grips. I recently showed the pistol to someone who told me that it was not correct due to the black grips and magazine. He stated that Police Mausers all had walnut grips and aluminum
magazines rather than the black polymer grips and fxo mag with a plactic bottom. Any help on this question would be greatly appreciated

One of the Mauser experts will likely chime in soon, but I believe that whoever you spoke to and showed your 42 Mauser is incorrect.

I am pretty sure that by 1942, black grips were pretty standard at Mauser...even for Police guns and the FXO mags were coming out with black bottoms and were unnumbered, as aluminum was getting to be in short supply.

Please post some good clear focus photos of your Luger here on the forum. The experts can tell you if what you have is what left the factory...

That is a magnificent pistol Sir.

Chuck, The grips appear to be original, but difficult to say for sure from photos. I would not expect the mags to have the E/37 military acceptance, but toward the end of the war, exceptions are quite possible. TH

As previously stated, the gun is in remarkable condition. The grips also appear to be original to me, but better closeup clear focus photographs of the grip interiors would make it easier to determine.

Yep, you don't see one like that every day...

"I would like to ask the question about if some Police Banners

Have not observed a Police banner dated 1938-1942 (four digit date) with black polymer grips. However, a 41 (two digit) dated banner is shown on page 164 of Third Reich Lugers.

When I started collecting many years ago the old time experts informed me that Police Banners were not issued with black grips.

However, Hallock on page 360 of his and Joops new book indicates that 20 % of police banners in the 1y-8737y serial range have black polymer grips.

What are the observations of collectors?
Thanks
Jan

Stan (added)

As you observed, Hallock on page 239 (left column next to last paragraph) states "Black plastic grip panels or magazine bottoms are not found on police Luger pistols that were purchased from Mauser"

Perhaps Joop can indicate which page to believe!

Also on page 146 Third Reich Lugers under Characteristics second line; walnut grips are listed as characteristic of 1938 to 1942 banner Police Lugers.

Ahem! Wow, for $35.00 you got a heck of a deal. That is beautiful.

tau-delt 03-05-2011 06:47 PM

Chuck... IMO the grips are as right as rain and are what I call Type 4.

Is there a number on the inside of the sideplate ?? Would like to see a picture of the backside of the sideplate.

Charles,
Forgive my rude attempt at humor. If I could afford it, the price on the tag is most reasonable. How many are there in this condition? Where has this Lady been kept? How did it
survive? Someone that had an appreciation for fine art has preserved it from the earliest days. I congratulate you on your fine taste and thank you for your continued preservation.

Hello Pitsword
No offense taken. I did not pay the 35on the tag and I did negotiate it down a significant amount. Thanks for the comments and I will try to take care of it. When I bought it from Mr. Shattuck he seemed to think it a correct piece but I was mostly talking to his son over the price.
I was very surprized to have found out that it was not exactly right . I must admit i have been looking for some walnut grips that may make it a little more authentic
Thanks again

Also Dave I will try to get a decent picture of the back of the side plate
