Straw color which parts......exactly?
 

I'm a newcomer to the forum but a gun collector from way back. I have a 30 cal 'refinished' shooter which I like. The guy who blued it did everything! First: best way to remove the blue from the parts. Next: exactly which parts are to be straw colored, I've noticed several mixes. Bill

I'm guessing that the .30 cal shooter is a 1920s Commercial. The strawed parts would be the takedown lever, the magazine release, the trigger, the safety lever and the ejector. The little safety "flag" that blocks the sear is "in the white".

in a related vein, Ron...or anyone else know which direction the "grain", or original machining marks run on a 1900 extractor? lengthwise, or across?

Neither, actually. The extractor is very smoothly polished spring steel like the ejector. If you strain your imagination you might convince yourself that it runs lengthwise but it is virtually imperceptible.

Hey Bill ! An older Luger refinishing expert told me to soak parts in White Vinegar to remove bluing as it is easier on etchings and stamped markings. Since your piece is refinished anyway, I would lightly sand with 320 -400 grit paper with nice even strokes in the same direction for a nicer finish. Heat parts with an electric paint stripper until you just see the color you want and then quench in 3in1 oil or the eqivalent. Often if you wait until you see the color you want and then quench it will end up darker. YMMV Joe

I'll try the vinegar on a part to see how it works. One piece I'm uncertain about: what is the sear bar supposed to be? Some pic seem straw, some old patina.......in the white?

The sear bar is blued. The disconnector (little plunger on the end) is in the white.

I decided to give my .30 cal shooter a straw job, everthing was blued. I used the white vinegar which worked well on all but the safety. I used a propane torch under flourescent light. I think the lighting is a big aid in getting the color. I'm very pleased with how it turned out. We'll see how the pic looks! Bill

Ron, would the same parts be strawed for a 1910 DWM Military Luger? Is the safety flag also in the white?
