Rust pitting and color fo them??

Ok, what would be the concensus on exactly what color a 80+ year old rust pit would be?? I ask because in looking over my 1914 Erfurt Artillary I noticed that the few spots of pitting are a very dark blackish color. What does everyone else think?

Doug,

The very dark blackish color over the pits are a natural evolution from rust. Bluing, whether it be rust or salt, is a form a controlled rust. In the pitted area, rust has formed in the normal red color, but over the years, it has formed a seal against the steel and turned black, therefore, a form of protection to the steel. I would not recommend trying to remove this natural bluing, just leave it as is and keep oil on it.
