I shoot nearly every week, fun and competition. Last Sunday was out with my Luger pulling off some pretty long shots in the desert. I'm still amazed how well it shot with its rough bore. If I told you soda cans at 100yrds you will probable say no way. Believe it! Had my son and a friend spotting my hits. They too couldn't believe their eyes.


This weekend I think I'll take my P-38 out....

I have done this too, Lugers are Amazingly accurate. With most of mine shooting 1 -2" high at 25" yds, they impact just about right on at 100yds. ~Thor~

been teaching a young disadvantage teeager to shoot and gun safty, think he is getting better than I. shoot a colt 22'. and baretta and the 9mm luger great fun for me and fun fun for him. Indoor range and like thor the luger shoots high.

It may be 9mm, but it ain't no Luger.


The luger's sights may be difficult to use if you are used to sharp sight pictures with sharp edges that fit well, but at least the gun can usually shoot to the same point of aim most of the time.


The P-38 may be a more modern design that was way ahead of it's time, and they will sure perform well at close combat ranges (like 10 yards or less on man sized targets), but beyond that, I have always considered them to be like lightning - they never strike twice in the same place The front sight is way too thin or the rear u-shaped notch is way to wide... and the single action trigger pull is far from acceptable for long distance shooting...

I went to the range (indoor)this morning with a broomhandle, P-38 and my Sauer 38H, but alas, the police were using it so will try again tomorrow.

I shoot a byf44 that is in like new condtion. One of Coles imports from Russia.


I agree with you John about the P-38 sights and spongie trigger. However I have done quite well with it also. You really have to make sure you pull the trigger "straight" back on a P-38. The trigger pull will allow you to jurk a shot bad when it breaks. All things being equal, I do believe a Luger has the accuracy edge hands down.


BTW, I was shooting Wolf 115gr ammo, good stuff. Also use their 223 for combat matches. Its accurate, feeds good, and cheep. For anything that demand more I use my handloads.

I hope to ge to the range Saturday to shoot one of my Lugers and my M1A. I have a new scope for the M1A and need to see how it will shoot.


Last evening I went to a friend house and we shot his Feinwerkebraue air rifle. Man, if you have never shot a $1500 BB Gun, you are missing a treat. The actions and trigger were the best I have ever seen! Standing at 18', I shot the center of the official target the first time! Nest times were not quite as good but always in the 10 ring.

Cotton Tail Rabbit with a 44 magnum with 180 gr Wadcutters at 750-ACCURATE! Shot them with the model 29 S&W at 25 yds for head shots (with a rest) when they were sunning in the morning. Used to hunt them and eat them! Not any more! Too many diseases and too much trouble. ~Thor~

I THINK I have a P.38 that MIGHT be able to make a couple of hits from a entire magazine. It has a fnh (CZECH) made barrel in a byf 43. It is my most accurate P.38 of the ones that I shoot. I think I will try it next time out and just see how bad I do. Used to fire a Colt Python6" (when my eyes were younger) that would print really tight groups at 100yds. A good range test perhaps next week when I shoot Luke's Artillery. ~Thor~

The P.38 is a much maligned pistol :-(


I can tell you, from my personal experience, that hitting a soda can at 100 yards with a P.38 is no great feat. Time after time, after time


The problem with hitting anything with a P.38 (or a Luger!) is the age of our eyes. Twenty years ago dusting a tin can at 100 yards with either a P.38 or a Luger was easy. Now my eyes are older, and I just put the black blur that is the rear sight on the black blur that is the front sight on top of where I want the bullet to go and hope for the best as I squeeze the round off.


IOW, the problem is not in our stars (or our pistols), but in ourselves :-(

The Feinwerkebraue Air Rifle was of the absolutle best quality of fit and finish. At first glance it looks like the Anschutz .22 cal. high end taget rifle, and the weight is the same. I was amazed at the accuracy, fit, feel, etc. of this rifle. I would love to have one, but I would rather spend that much money on another Luger, LOL.

My experience was back in the mid 1980's when my eyes were much younger and my job was full-time coach and team member of the Army combat pistol team at Fort Gordon, GA. I could pop soda cans all day at ranges from 50 to 100 yards with my 1911A1 and my byf 41 Luger, but the three P-38's I had at the time(AC41, AC43 and BYF44), and one that belonged to a friend just couldn't keep up...


Reliability was another matter. I NEVER had a P-38 fail to function. I think they are a fine close quarters combat pistol, but I wouldn't want to depend on one of them for long range work. The moving barrel just isn't as accurate as the fixed barrel Luger, or a tuned 1911A1.

Well John I feel the same way about the 1911A1, as it was our carry gun for probably 12 or 14 years.


Very reliable, although almost all of our frames were from WW2 era. some new parts, but when I went through Unit Armorer School, it was amazing how thye pointed out the Rand, Remington, etc., slides and frames.


So even tho we had jams, I believe new ones wouldn't have been so likely to jam. And they fed fine in all kinds of weather and all, but not very accurate. But, for a combat weapon, it was just fine. I always think it is silly to practice at man sized target 50 feet away (for combat), because if they are 50 feet away, grab an M-16 and shoot them.

I shot my P-38 AC 42 today at the range, (25yds) and would not have hit many beer cans!!

The best use for empty beer cans that I have heard of was when I went to a Civil War re-enactment. When I talked to a man on a cannon, he said that the replicas of the old cannons are all bored out to the diameter of a beer can. When they want to actually shoot something, they use concrete filled beer cans as the ammo!
