"PS" Presentation crest...
 

I'm sure that most of the collectors here are familiar with the long barreled tanget sight GL marked specimen currently in PIA's stock....surely a beautiful Luger, and I'm woefully undereducated to pass judgement on it. However, it kind of jumps out (to my eyes anyway) how crude the "PS" surrounded by squiggly loops appears compared to a Swiss sunburst, American eagle or other crests. One would think the work would be just as good or better than on production guns......?

Old guns like this may have gone through many owners. The crest may not be from the factory, added at some later date by a less skilled craftsman. You could also say this of the "GL" marking. ( very controversial)

This gun does have some issues, use every last drop of knowledge available to you before considering such a purchase and make a knowledgeable decision.

Faking of lugers goes back to at least the late 50's, this also starts the "Luger Book" production time frame. At least some of our best known lugers are now in question.

Someone once said " Believe nothing you hear and only half of what you read" when it comes to high end lugers you would be wise to remember this quote.

And what would be a logical reason for that zero to be bigger than the rest of the zeros in serial# on the frame? Double strike?

Does anyone know the asking price for this item?

It is rather funny to see a 1966 gun magazine article being quoted as 'provenance'.

It just shows that if it is a fantasy piece, it has been created before 1966, in other words it proves very little.

Real provenance would be a period reference (i.e. 1900 - 1910) to the piece.

This gun shows signs of having been restored sometime in its long history. Look closely at the barrel SN and you will see softening of the SN there. A logical thought would be that the restorer messed with the frame SN's and botched the job.
You can also see a distinct outline of fading bluing near/around the crest. With a DWM factory gun this would never happen, the bluing would be uniform.

The "GL" on the rear of the frame has the same quality as the SN's on the front of the frame, this could lead someone to believe that the two of them were applied at the same time.


This is a beautiful gun shown in many books and magazines anyone would be proud to own it no matter what its heritage.

I don't know the asking price, its very very high I am sure.
