Identification & Front Sight problems

10 Attachment(s)
Hello

I am new to this very nice forum and this is my first post.

I've recently acquired my first Luger and would really like some help to identify it. I know that it is a DMW from 1917, but that's it.

Also the front sight is loose and can be moved even more to the left than shown i the pictures. I cannot move it more to the middle.

Hi,

The receiver notch shows that the receiver was once attached to an artillery barrel. The Tikka marked barrel shows that the current barrel is Finnish. The Finns also had their own sights which differ from the normal production ones. This sight looks like a home made or home modified one. personally I'd tap it out and get a replacement one. Chances are it will also cure the loose fit in one go.

The rear sight has also been modified, you normally find a V-shaped notch. Dunno if this is a Finnish modification though.

With the square rear sight, a square P38 front sight may also be a good option, if you plan on shooting it.

It is also mismatched, making it a shooter

Your Luger was originally a LP08 (Artillery) model. It now has a barrel made by Tikka in Finland. I do not think it was ever a Finnish military piece as it does not bear the [SA] mark. The front sight has a similar appearance to a Tikka sight but I do not believe it is one. I see that there has been some effort exerted to move it, probably with a pin punch and hammer as evidenced by the deformation of the metal. It may not be a correct sight and therefore will not fit, but I think you could remove it completely from the left and clean up the slot and dovetail on the sight and try it again. You may have to touch up the dovetail with a fine file, but don't over do it. Good luck.
Ron

P.S. Gerben and Doug type faster than I do so they got their reply in while I was posting mine. Please excuse the redundant info!:)

Thank's everybody for this information I am really impressed.

My plan is to use this gun as a shooter. Where can I find a P38 front sight or a Tikka replacement one.

If that is so, then the toggle train has been swapped also. It has a rear sight.

Rich,
Yep, you are correct. That is probably part of the mismatch that Doug spotted.

Kress, I do have P38 or NOS Mauser PO8 front sight blades available @$35 each post paid to Sweden. TH

Hello

Perfect, will they both fit the Tikka barrel? Which one would you recommend?

Hi Kress, The toggle train is the three connected parts shown in the photo. Breech block, middle toggle link, and rear toggle. Regards, Norm

You have a fairly rare Tikkakoski barrel...Why not put a Finnish front sight on it? :)

Where can I find such a sight?

Kress, I believe that the front sight shown in your photos is a Finnish replacement. In lieu of that one the P38 type would probably be best for your square profile rear appeture. TH
