identify magazine?

Can anybody help me identify a magazine I have? I know pictures would really help, sorry no access to a camera. Its a blued mag with an aluminum bottom with numbers 7479 and it looks to be a script "w". There is also a number 5 on the mag bottom right next to where the pin goes thru.

Is the magazine made of extruded steel or bent steel?

If it looks like this one then it is for a 1939-42 Mauser made luger.

mrerick sorry for my newbness but I dont know the difference between extruded or bent steel. It has the exact same "w" but thats all no other markings on the bottom other then the number.

newbness doesn't matter, I have been playing with these for a long time and I get the extruded and blah, blah and simply can't tell the difference to a new guy...

Looking at magazines, I can tell you when they were made, but trying to say it outloud, well, I just can't.

In this hobby on the forum, its why a picture is worth a thousand words, it shouts out what type it is, even if you don't know. :)

But, just by what you said, its a WW2 era magazine (most likely, but the reason to ask for pictures is to ensure it is not a post war repro or DDR mag)

Here they are, extruded below. Regards, Norm

Pretty simple actually. The rolled steel crimp mags are like a can of beans. The metal seam is joined by hooking the metal edges together in U shape and squashing them together to attach them.
The extruded type have no seam at all. They are pushed out of a die whole in circumfrence so no seam is needed to join an edge cause there ain't no edge to join.

in Norm's excellent photo's you can see the seam below the spring about a quarter inch below the spring window.
On the extruded mag you can see a line there but no seam as it is whole metal that does not need to be joined.
You will also notice differences in the steel of each mag. The top sheet steel mag looks more like the bean can as it is thin sheet steel.
The mag below is pushed out of a die while hot and molten..like taking a dump after a night cruising bars in Tiajuana. Different metal to achieve this.
Once you recognize these mags for what they are... you will wonder why people who can't see it are such blockheads. I guess I am supposed to put in a smiley face here..Not.

well my mag looks exactly like the top one in Norms picture. I think I understand, the extruded ones are pushed thru a die to achieve the desired shape where as the bent kind are stamped?

Pretty much.

Does anybody have any clue how much its worth?

mrerick 11-28-2010 09:06 PM

It's hard to estimate value without the photos.

Condition, actual era, rarity all contribute to a valuation. The appearance of the stamped numbers / letter help identify if it's original or something done somewhere other than the factory.

There should be a WaAmt stamp on an original magazine, and it should have never been ground down where the serial number is. I don't know what the number "5" might relate to in your description.

You can get extruded DDR Mags for $85. MegGar magazines for $50. An original like the one Tom pictured, perhaps $125 - $150...

What you have is anyone's guess at this point.

They usually sell for around $100-$120. There are a lot of Luger mags on Gunbroker recently. Just like everything else, they aren't selling for as much as they were in the past.

Im gonna try to get some pics up soon, the reason im asking is id like to sell it if its a decent mag to someone that maybe needs it and purchase a couple repro mags as i have a mix matched number shooter. Thanks for the help this far though fellas.
