1917 arty...questions...
hello, new to the luger world and this forum. hoping i didnt screw my self in this deal... problems i have wiht this gun and my limited reading/knowledge
-barrell witness mark is not aligned -dont see numbers on grips (external or do you remove em?) -dont see number on wood bottom mag (where?) -pitting etc is not as pretty as some -last but not least, hammer(?) will not fall when trigger is pulled, previous owner said he had a failure of some sort and then disassembled and couldnt get it back together. i reinstalled the side plate, and put that double moon shaped thing in the correct spot i believe. btw, traded this for a 1911 that i assembled. foster frame, sarco parts kit i will post better pics witha real camera tomorrow. it died tonight in process while i was trying to get close ups of the barrel id. oh, everyhing appears to match. i shall read/research/learn more tomorrow... http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h.../Photo0472.jpg http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h.../Photo0473.jpg http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/h.../Photo0474.jpg ball park value would be interesting with the current photos, info. thanks |
Hi Alex, Welcome to the forum. I'm afraid we'll need better photos before we can help much. Grips are numbered on the inside, be careful removing the left one, it's easily chipped. Regards, norm

if all you gave was a 1911 parts gun, you did great! ummm.....but I'm really curious where the "double moon shaped thing" is ...... I can't find it on mine!

Hi,
The 8.82 is the barrel gauge in millimeters. It's the measurement from land to land within the barrel. The good news is that the trigger transfer lever isn't properly installed inside the trigger plate. That's why things won't fire. Someone must have de-activated this to prevent someone (perhaps a child) from firing the gun. The little round lever swings up and pulls out. Sometimes these are pretty stiff. There are good diagrams of the Luger on this site. It does look like the barrel's been off and re-installed for some reason. Try taking your pictures outdoors in indirect light without the flash. It's hard to gauge the finish from these pictures. I don't see the "Halos" typically found around the barrel serial number, which may indicate it's been refinished. Marc |
ah ok, thanks for the heads up on the pic taking tips, i havent taken a class, or readthe manwell, so i have no idea what i am doing....how about aprrox value? the button on the wooden mag is kinda mangled as well

Again, without knowing the full finish condition, inside barrel condition and originality of the grips, it's hard to estimate value here.
I think an arty all matching and original finish would be worth $1200 at the low end, and the upper teens on average. Be forewarned! The most costly thing on a Luger is the addiction that comes with it. You can feel the addiction as you hold your first Luger in your hand. The balance... The graceful design. And, in the case of an Arty, the long barrel and precision sights... How are you going to keep that beautiful pup in clothes!!! It's not too difficult to re-assemble your trigger plate or dis-assemble the Luger. Just take things slow, and don't force things. The little round pin in the trigger plate is sometime in there very snugly, so consider getting help from a gunsmith experienced with Lugers if you need it. YouTube has some videos on disassembly / reassembly, so search there as well... Again, welcome and congratulations on your Arty. You did very well in your exchange. Marc |

ya i checked out the bore last night, it is pretty dark and murky in there. i plan on scrubbing it out after deer season...

Cute pup! man, you must spend a LOT of time in the woods, if you don't have time to clean the bore! I'd be dying to see how nice it would clean up...I'd thoroughly wet swab the bore with a good solvent like Butch's Bore Shine or Shooter's choice, let it set 3 or 4 hours, then scrub the heck out of it with a new tight fitting bronze bore brush, then finish off with some lapping with JB bore paste.....it'll be as good as it's ever going to get...you might be pleasantly surprised!
