S/42 issue
 

I am new to the forum. I have recently purchase a Mauser S/42 and I am having problems with the shell extraction. It will function correctly about 25% of the time. When it mal****ions it does not eject the shell competely and the toggle will remain half open. I have tried several types off ammo with the same results. Any help would be appreciated.

When the toggle stays half open, is it jammed against the spent cartridge, or is the gun catching the toggle and keeping it open?
Can you (safely at the range) manually cycle a full magazine thru the gun by repeatedly raising the toggle and letting it fall on it's own?
Any signs of damage to the spent case?
So it extracts the case from the chamber but does not throw it clear of the gun? Then it pushes it forward and jams the case into the gun?

It is jammed against the spent case, I can cycle it, but have not tried to cycle a full mag. There appears to be no damage to the case. Thanks for you help.

Try a new magazine from Gerald Tomek on this forum. It solved my failure to feed problems on my 1938 S42.

I'm wondering if the ejector isn't broken. So it will extract but not kick it out of the receiver? How about cycling it by hand. Will it clear then or stay in the receiver?

What types of ammo did you try exactly? Was Winchester white box 115gr one of them?

Chuckdog - Please post a pic of the broken ejector. I am sure that others may have experienced this malfunction and it would be good to have examples of broken & unbroken to compare.

Sometimes a broken part will look so even that you'd swear it was made that way. :thumbup:

I had an experience back in Motor Transport where a brake booster diaphragm I examined had a perfectly centered 1/8" hole in the center...I asked a Sergeant if it was correct, and he said yes...we had no spares, and the truck was a bear to try to stop without a functioning brake booster...I was skeptical, and took apart a booster on a functioning truck...no hole...I spent the next 19 months as an E3, but it taught me to never trust Sergeants...and to trust my instincts and my own eyes... ;)

Chuck et al, In some cases the ejector need not be broken for this type jam to occur. I've seen some replacements that were not properly fitted to move freely all the way in & out, and were sticking in the receiver. So when you replace yours, be sure that it moves ALL the way in smoothly. I do have both blued or strawed originals available @$50 each + S&H. Tom
