Barrel Drawings/blueprints
 

Good Evening,

I am located in canada, and due to our stupid gun laws It it almost impossible to get a luger as most of the barrels on lugers appear to be below the canadian legal limit of 104mm. now that being said i am learning machining and own a lathe, i have access to some 9mm barrel blanks and would like to try my hand at making a 5" luger Barrel ( Practicing on scrap pieces first of course ) does any one know where i could find/obtain detailed drawings or blueprints of a luger barrel?? threading info, profiling ect..ect..

Thanks Rick W and everyone else for the information. the only part im not very sure on it the machining of the from sight base into the barrel, any ideas on how that is done?

I use a rotary indexing head + tailstock with the barrel mounted horizontally and mill the band about every 6º (IIRC)...I use a radiused end mill and my usual barrel blank is like 1 3/16" dia...I dovetail a roughly machined front sight blank into the FSB and mill it in place.

I did a pictorial of a fantasy artillery barrel a year or so ago, showing the steps of the machining process...It's here somewhere...

I'm told there are other re-barreling/fabricating threads in the Archives here, but I don't know who posted them or the titles (you'll notice my title has nothing to do with machining) so i was never able to Search for them... :(

BTW: Harvey Tool makes a 40º x 3/16" dovetail cutter that should work well for cutting a dovetail for OEM Luger/Walther front sight bases...

That is exactly what I do...And then use an undersized dovetail cutter (3/16" in the case of Luger/Walther) and conventional mill the first side (there will be a bit of climb milling on the other side, but this is pretty much unavoidable with a dovetail cutter) and then conventional mill the other side...Using only the sides of the dovetail cutter to actually cut (the bottom is already cut with the end mill)...

I just ordered Harvey's 40º x 3/16" dovetail cutter... :p

wow, thanks again!! that post you linked to had everything i needed to know, i wanted an excuse to get a rotary head/table and now i have one!
