My grandfather took this gun from a dead Nazi. My family wants to know what it is worth...

Luger ID form questions:
1. Toggle Inscription - 42
2. Chamber Inscription - 1940
3. Toggle Knob Type (“Smooth Dished”, or “Squared and Knurled”)
4. Grip Safety (“Present” or “Not Present5. Stock Lug (“Present” or “Not Present”)
6. Caliber (“9mm” or “7.65mm /.30 Luger”)
7. Grip Type Walnut or Beech, Smooth or Checkered, With or Without a Border, or Plastic in brown or
black, With or Without Insignia
8. Thumb Safety (“Safe” in forward or rear position, Describe Markings - rear "GESICHERT" (in yellow)
9. Describe any and all marking as completely as possible, including their locations on the firearm. Use
Numbered Markings from Parabellum website if possible - Manufactuerer logo= "42" (Mauser) code; Proof = #46 from proof list and under first two eagle markings the number 655 appears. There is no number under the third eagle.
10. Barrel Length (Measure from Forward End of Extractor to Muzzle - 4 inches
11. Markings on Left Edge of Extractor - ?? not sure what this means?
12. Description of Front and Rear Sights - ??
13. Magazine Bottom Plug Material and Markings - Both mags have Nazi Eagle symbol with aluminum bottom plug and serial numbers matching the gun.

....Using these criteria, describe the condition of your Luger as objectively as possible:
85-95% of bluing remaining, it appears that the wear is from the holster. No straw colored finish (discontinued after 1937). Bore is excellent, rifling is sharp and bore shines. Grips are dirty, but the checkering is sharp. All parts have matching serial numbers (same last two digits of 49). Has 2 correct magazines with matching serial numbers. Has holster and loading/take-down tool.

As original finsih makes a huge difference (i have had someone say it was original finish and it was nickled)

The questions (which I see above are answered) Is it all matching? Is the magazine matching?

Does it have a holster, tool or extra magazine with it?

Everything depends on condition, all parts matching, to include firing pin, the take down pin for the toggle, etc.

For me the most important part of this rig are the mag bottoms. Can you post better more detailed pics of them? The pistol looks pretty nice from what you have shown.

With the exception of the one dent in one of the magazine tubes the pistol looks like it is in very nice condition... I will let those who are active in collecting and trading value the gun for you. I hope it is only for insurance purposes... a family heirloom like that should never leave your family. It is a part of not only your Grandfather's history, but world history. It could never be replaced.

Looks like a very nice early 1940 in the no suffix block with two matching magazines. If you offered it for sale on this Forum for $3,300+ I would think you would get a buyer.

with additional pictures, $2000 would be a cheap price for 2 matching magazine 1940/42 in my opinion if keeping in the family and although not as high as above, $2800-$3000 does not sound unreasonable to me retail...
