STRANGE Takedown Lever

Anyone ever see one of these? Anyone know what it is?

Found this on a reworked 1917 Navy. Whoever reworked the gun took off a lot of metal, but this takedown lever actually has the remnants of something that looks like a matching serial number.

Would appreciate any comments. Thanks.

Looks to me like the original was filed down

and the stub of the knob was then serrated like the safety lever. So it is possible that it is the original takedown lever that has been "modified" (butchered is such an ugly word Luke!) Does it appear that the "handle" has been soldered or otherwise attached to the shaft of the takedown lever, or is it one piece?

My opinion:

attached = made from a safety lever or scrap metal.

one piece = filed down and serrated original lever.

The originals are hollow in the back. The lever would have to be built up to provide an area to groove.

Thanks Johnny I had forgotten that the knob is hollow...

I haven't had to take one down for quite a while. In that case either the original takedown lever was welded up and then shaped like a safety or a safety lever handle was used to repair it... Could have been an eastern block re-work or just a handy gunsmith with no access to original parts.

Many of the takedown levers have either been broken or severely bent down while trying to force them down with a screwdriver without knowing the proper procedure for moving them.
