lapua ammo

Hello everyone,

I am new to lugers and I would like to know who has uses Lapua 123 grains ammo in a p08. It has a velocity of 320 m/s. I have read that no ammunition should be used in a p08 with a higher velocitythan 320 m/s.

Hi,

S&B 124gr and Winchester 115gr work well.

The velocity is not the main issue: overal average length, a slow burning powder, not too exotic bullet shapes and you should be good to go.

Here's an overview of velocity tests that Mauser did in the early seventies:

Thank you for the information

Do you know what kind of ammo the Germans used?

And do I need to look for an round that produces the lowest amount of pressureon the action?

I`ll post some pictures of my byf41 soon

The ammo the Germans used during WW2 is the last type you want to use. It's crap in more ways than one.

Stick to S&B or Winchester and you'll be fine :)

Leen,

I don't know about their 9mm, but their 7.65mm shoots wonderful!

Thank you

Do you have any experience with magtech or geco?

BogeyB 10-15-2010 10:43 AM

Leen,

I like the 124gr. GEACO ( RWS ) in my P08's

Dear Mike,

How did you found out what ammunition to shoot in your p08 and what ammo you shoukd not ? Lot`s of people tell me that shooting factory loads in a po8 will break it. And that a velocity hogher then 320 meters per second is not good.

Could you please help me out?

Vlim 10-15-2010 11:26 AM

Leen,

This is a common myth based on unfamiliarity with the design and use. Do a search on the forum and you will see that the advice given here is correct: Stick to S&B and/or Winchester and you'll be fine. GeCo and Lapua will not harm the pistol, but GeCo is a bid mild and will not always trigger the hold-open after the last shot.

If you are afraid to shoot your pistol, then don't.

Leen,

Trial and error, personal preference, etc... Whatever works for you and you can afford!

Steve, you're not convincing him this way, I think, lol :D

thegundude 10-15-2010 01:56 PM

LOL! Ya, if figgered that if he wasn't convinced by now he never would be so I was just having fun. :D

I'm a slave to my sense of humor. It gets me into more trouble.... :p

Leen: the invitation to come to our range still stands. You will be able to meet a couple of luger 'survivors' there :)

Vlim -

AH!!! "geschosz gewichte" = projectile weights!!!

Here's a helpful site - http://www.archive.org/stream/milita...mrich_djvu.txt - Military vocabulary : German-English and English-German

But back to geschosz-gewichte - is that in ounces??? What unit of weight is that??? Grams???

Vlim 10-15-2010 03:55 PM

yes, bullet weight :)

It is the weight in grams: 8.0 Grams is approx. 124gr.

Armin 10-15-2010 05:09 PM

Leen,
I regularly shoot 95gr Magtech ammo in my Lugers. This is a very hot ammo with respect to energy and very very fast but due to the low bullet weight the momentum is very soft. The momentum is so soft that this ammo just exceeds the minimum momentum required in competitions in Germany. The characteristics of this ammo comes near the 7.65 Para. The accuracy of that ammo is brilliant but not every clip works with it properly. So ist is required to find an appropriate clip but the effort will pay off.

Very good! Could you correct these approximate translations? -

Vollmantel = full jacketed (?)
Panzerbrechend = armor breaking (piercing?)
Holspitzgeschoss = hollow point projectile (?)

(I know they're not correct; but the best I could do) :p

OK, I've attempted to convert Vlim's Mauser list to Yankee units...I had trouble with the 5's & 6's = i can't tell which one Mauser wrote, so I 'assumed' they were 6's...

(My apologies to all Metric & Deutsch reading peoples) :p

Vlim 10-16-2010 03:54 PM

Nice work :)

We'll have you speaking German in no time :)
