General Patton
1 Attachment(s)
Often seen with a variety of guns on his hip, can anyone identify the gun on General Patton's hip in this photo?
Even under magnification, I can't discern which gun this is... |
Only one gun looked like that back in the late 1930's....The P-35 Browning High Power...

Didn't Patton carry a revolver? However, at 150%, it does resemble an automatic.

I think He used these while in dress uniform

And Yours when He was in the field. He had multable beauties. Probobly one for each day of the month.

I know when Patton went on desert maneuvers, he carried a Colt Woodsman to shoot snakes.

His personal M1 Garand is in the VMI museum.

The butt is too large and too wide to be anything smaller than a 9mm. Patton liked to own the latest gun toys. He was among the first to obtain a .357 Magnum, so for him to purchase the then new, (and the first) wonder 9mm is not too far fetched.
I still say Browning High Power |
Gentleman- I have been here awhile lurking and learning from you fellow collectors and this is my first post here and would like to add my 2 cents of opinion on the photo. Part of the General's pistol grip tends to be in the shadows and in many ways appears to give off the look of a highpower grip. However I do not make out an external hammer on the pistol in the photogragh though the angle of the photo and the General's jacket maybe a hiding factor. All that said my guess is a Remington pistol.-Dave

MORE Photo!

Okay, I just discovered the larger version of the photo in question, and it exposes more of the holster. It appears from this photo that the gun is in fact a Colt woodsman apparently with some custom grips...
The earlier version of the photo made it appear that the gun was much smaller... Here is the whole photo: |
Hello
Its great how all the intelligent gents on this forum can piece together information from a photo. That picture ,IMHO ,was taken at the Desert Tank Training center near Amboy CA. Its in the middle of the Mojave Desert. He is standing in front of a early M3 Stuart AKA Honey tank. There are lots of snakes to shoot out there! Bob |

Possibly an early Match Target with elephant ear grips?
|
Jack,
That was my guess. |
Looks like an Audley holster - common for an upscale outdoorsman at the time.
H |
An Audley holster would have had a strip of leather stiched under the trigger cut out. Maybe a Heiser??
Mike |
Definitely not an Audley. Gen Patton had some of his holsters made by El Paso Saddlery, but I don’t think the pattern is correct for one of those. Heiser is a good probability.
