i have a byf 41 luger , mismatched , appears to have been refinished at some point , black widow grips , front sight appears to be a replacement , some pitting in bore , no rust , some scratches etc , with a repro holster , loading tool , and 2 original non matching magazines - trying to put a good price on it - i have been told $600 ? any input would be most welcome

Hi James, Welcome to the forum. May we see close ups of the two magazine bases, and the insides of the black plastic grips. Your rig may be worth a little more than $600.00. Regards, Norm

yeah - sure - probably be tommorow before i can take more pix - one mag base is wood - the other alloy - i know lugers can command some bucks -

Depending on a few variables, I'd speculate that you have a bit more there than $600. But not a lot, maybe $750-$800, but that is last-man-out retail and again depends on the value of the magazines, grips, etc.

Assuming the grips are real bakelite grips you should take them off and offer them on Ebay. Your return should be about $300. If the magazine is real take it out and sell it $125 plus. Then replace the mag with a Mecgar mag and the grips with reproduction grips and sell the gun for $700. It's all a matter of maximizing your potential.

In the meat business we called it "breaking" as in breaking cattle; the sum of the parts is worth more than the whole.

now there is some advice i can really use - thanks a bunch

Thanks for the pictures. IMO the grips are not original and the first mag is post war. I also believe the holster is a reproduction.

lugerholsterrepair 09-16-2010 06:39 PM

Dave is spot on. Holster is a decent repro..but a repro. Mags are not right. Grips are not right. Hard to say about the pistol without opening it up and looking it over. Or better yet shooting it because that's what you have here. A decent shooter rig.

Assuming the grips are real (not) bakelite grips you should take them off and offer them on Ebay. Your return should be about$00 If the magazine is (not)Keep with pistol. Lookd DDR. plus. Then replace the mag with a Mecgar mag and the grips with reproduction grips and

sell the gun for $700. There are a lot of guys looking for a shooter just like this.

Sorry for the bad news!

i know the holster is a repro - so the grips are aftermarket ? no markings on em - the whole gun has obviously been refinished at some point - polished and reblued - i dunno - i think i am just gonna keep it - $700 ish ? not bad imo for a good shooter

The threaded holes in the grips were designed to hold the grip screws so they would not get lost. You can see the holes in these grips are way too big to hold the grip screws securely

Never the less, it is still a Luger and a nice one. Enjoy it.

tau-delt 09-17-2010 09:41 AM

Doug... If you have Don and Joops THE MAUSER PARABELLUM you might read my comments on page 657 about the holes in the grips.

When I first started the study on black grips I thought the holes were for the screws but IMO they were the function of how they removed the grips from the molds and the fact that SOME of the holes will actually take a grip screw is coincidental.

Lugerdoc 09-17-2010 10:22 AM

I believe that the grips shown are Finnish postwar replacements. TH

jussi16 09-17-2010 12:54 PM

Hello Doc!
I disagree. Those grips are not similar with the finnish post war ones.
I had to open my treasure chest and look. I don`t have a pic, but they are not the same. The mould is not the same.
Maybe a one more copy made recently...
