Proper display and storing of a Luger?

I have never owned another pistol, Luger or otherwise, that I thought of as a truly special pistol. My 1900AE Test that THOR just restored for me I feel makes it, for me, a truly special Luger. Having never owned anything outside of what I would call a 'service' or "regular use' pistol that would get cleaned, oiled and placed back in it's holster or storage case like my 1911, or SAA (Nope, they are not old originals, but modern made) what is the best way to display a Luger, the mag stand type? and the best way to store long term ect?
Thanks,Bill

Hi Bill, Most of my collection is locked away, so I made a couple of stands that double as bookends. From time to time I rotate guns to keep things interesting. Every once in a while I wipe them down with a silicone cloth. Regards, Norm

Nice Norm!

Don't store it in a leather holster. The acids in the leather can interact with and damage the finish over time.

I made an oak stand similar to the bookends that Norm has shown above. It's useful for display and for photography.

I store guns in a safe with a GoldenRod dehumidifier. They are stored in silicone impregnated zipper cases or silicone based gun socks.

Bill,

Over the years I've purchased several pistol display stands from these folks.

They do the job for SA, 1911s and Lugers. They offer single and multiple pistol stands in a variety of wood finishes.

Just FYI.

I found this and love it, but the price is pretty stiff. i was thinking of making my own, but was looking for some guidance on what wood, felt, etc would be best for storing and displaying.

If anyone has any reccomendations for making your own, that would be great.

Thanks

They all look like red oak... I dabble in woodworking, may give this a try. Fairly straight forward, a box with some scroll saw work on the insert.

would there be anything i need to do to keep the gun's surface safe, prevent rusting etc?

There is a discussion on corrosion prevention on this site's "General Information" page.

I keep mine lightly oiled with a rust preventive light gun oil.

yikes! stiff is a mild term. I can make these for a lot less if anybody is interested. I could see those prices if they were made from some exotic woods but oak is pretty cheap and readily available here in the states.

I store mine in a "bore store", they are in expensive and can be found at midway.

Guns 3545:

Thanks for your posting on Ft.Sandflats gun display racks. I called them and they are building me a six position Luger horizontal rack for $40.00. The owner said their new format for the stand is to have the barrel rack in the center of the stand so that the guns can be staggered facing each other or can be displayed on one side facing the same direction. He hasn't had time to post new pictures of such a stand. He said it would be a week or so before they could get to building mine because they are overloaded iwith work. Seems to be really nice people to deal with.
