Front Sight Markings
I am embarassed to admit that after all these years fooling with Lugers I have just noticed the markings on the forward surface of some front sight bases. For example, a 1915 DWM shows an indecipherable mark, a 1920 commercial shows the letter "D", and a 1921 date police has an "OC". I have not checked all the Lugers yet, but so far I have not found any markings on Lugers after 1939. So far I can't find any reference to this in the books, but I am still looking. Can anyone throw any light on these marks?

Re: Front Sight Markings
Hey Marvin - my 1918 DWM has 'N' in circle, and my byf/42 has nothing, as you have already found out. It seems to be another inspection mark, but what strage palce to put it. Hmmmm.

Re: Front Sight Markings
Interesting! So far I have not found two markings alike!(Please note I have used my full name in order not to be confused with the original Marvin.)

Re: Front Sight Markings
Hello Marvin,
Man, i thought I was having an "elderly moment" when I didn't remember posting the original message in this thread, HA, HA, HA. Since there will be two of us on the Forum with the same first name, I will post as Marvin C. This way there will not be any confusion. Welcome to the Forum and please come often. Marvin C. |
Re: Front Sight Markings
My 1918 DWM has a "1" beside an "N" in a circle on the front of the sight.

Re: Front Sight Markings
Marvin E, The only front sight base inspection marking that I'm framiliar with on WW2 Mauser PO8s, is an upside down commerical eagle on most police, commerical & contract lugers from 1937 to 1942. Tom h.

Re: Front Sight Markings
I have checked my Constanza book and on page 325 have found an entire display of markings on front sight bases. I think Constanza is a wonderful reference!

Re: Front Sight Markings
I had always wondered what the "7" was on the base of the front sight on my 1916 Erfurt.
